Seattle has a significantly better job market with higher wages (assuming you'll be finding a new job). Between the better economy and being able to live on the water Seattle wins out for me. There's water everywhere in Seattle, which as mentioned previously creates poor traffic and is one factor driving high housing costs, but it's a pretty great quality of life feature despite those downsides IMHO.
Seattle - bigger city, better economy, more job opportunities, water everywhere, lots of homeless people
Portland - smaller city, less traffic, less people, cheaper, even more homeless people

They may even let us live in Bend but not sure yet.
bend is a cool place to visit, not sure i'd live there. i'd imagine (without any research on my part) that real estate there is really expensive
on the plus side, that whole area is incredibly beautiful and within a 30 mil drive you've got nearly endless recreational options. that doesnt pay the mortgage though...

Bend has multi million dollar homes and also a market that is similar to Portland. Real estate prices, realistic ones, will be the highest in Seattle.

Exactly why I've only dreamed of living there. For the most part it's service jobs. Almost everyone that I know that lives there work from home.

Friend of mine who grew up in Bend just retired and moved back, but he moved to Redmond, guess it's less expensive there but close to Bend

He's smart. It's 21 miles away. Same weather etc. I now have my sights set on Culver one day. Just a small farm town but it has serious mountain views. Better than anything in Bend at a cheaper price.

Seattle is epic, especially in summer.
Portland is the weirdest place on earth. Everyone just trying to outweird one another. But it's the strip club capital of US. Pirate stripper club, vegan strip club, kareoke strip club. If it's weird, they have it

Agree here. Sometimes it seems like there's a central wardrobe that provides everyone with the same ironic clothing styles.
I find Oregon a bit unsettling. It's a lot like WA (where I live) but they had to tweak a bunch of shite for the sake of being different so I always feel slightly out of my zone.
They do have gigantic Fred Meyer's though, so that's a plus.

Oregon had a lot of communes back in the 70s. Those folks urbanized and reproduced, which is why Western Oregon is always trying to out-weird everyone else.

Makes sense. They're definitely on their own wave link down there.

What about Boise, Idaho?

Portland sucks. I’m there a lot.
If you can’t afford Seattle proper look across Lake Washington at either the Snohomish/Issaquah or Redmond/Kirkland areas. Both about 15 miles from Seattle, super nice, no homeless folk, and 30-45 minutes to ski at Alpental.. Hour and a half for better skiing at Stevens Pass or Crystal Mountain. Hiking and whatnot in your backyard. I’m not a suburbs guy but I’d live out there.
