Mt. Rushmore?
Looking for personal travel experience not on any guide, as well as lodging tips if you have any. No schedule two days to two weeks to make it there. Been to Chicago a few times, LA, NY so trying to avoid larger cities. So where ya been that you would visit again?
Next leg to Yellowstone, them Salt Lake, then Sequoias National Forest, then to Vegas and on down to S. Padre Island/Star Base before heading back to the LP.
Would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Bardstown, Kentucky for a bourbon tour and tasting if you're into that sort of thing.

Had a long road trip from Buffalo to Seattle last Year, I'll try and find the thread today. Did the drive in a week and didn't feel like that was enough time especially for South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. You can keep driving through Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa

Thread from last year

Niagara Falls is best if you go on the Canadian side so I would wait on that

That's a tall order. I have driven to many of the places on your itinerary and I can only think of a few places where we stopped that are probably not on some type of travel guide. We like to get off the interstate, if we have the time, and take state highways and county roads.

All I can think of between NF (we were there in May) and Rapid City, SD is to drive across the UP of Michigan to WI and get a pasty (pronounced paaaste, I think). It's a type of meat pie and apparently only found on the UP.

While there go to Sault St. Marie and watch the ships pass through the canal/lock. A friend of my wife post pictures of that on FB all the time so it must be a big deal, especially in the winter.

We have traveled some of your trip, but choose to get off-interstate. Our interests are more history and "life americana"; not urban explorers, camper/hikers, or wine/beer tasters. So understand that when I give you a few sights/places.

Minn:
Austin - Things Hormel, like Spam museum [was interesting]
Pipestone - National Park [glad we went]

Iowa:
Amana - Amana Farms
Gladstone - Matchstick Marvels [had to see the creations]

South Dakota:
De Smet- Laura Ingalls homes/history [really great insight to very early prairie life]
Mitchell- Corn Palace [beautiful corn cob murals]
Interior- Badlands NP entrance [great drive/sights]
Wall- Wall Drugs [Why? Why not. It's unique]

Most of these places aren't on the typical roadmap of sights to see. These would only aid you in planning if you had a desire to see some ono=typical sights.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is very interesting. There are some falls there, but the main thing is a trail made from the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath. It's interesting, a little off the beaten path, and something worth seeing.
