Go somewhere to beat the heat. Colorado is always an easy choice. Banff/Lake Louise would probably be too far but would be an amazing getaway. We just went to Mexico City and enjoyed the cooler temps. Not sure if you can fly direct from N.O.

I did a weekend trip like that to Salt Lake City a couple years ago. Some really fun places in salt lake. Hiking is incredible just outside the city. Some cool Mormon things to check out just because it's different and some pretty cool places to eat and drink in the city.
Could definitely find some cool things to do there for a weekend.

We just spent 3 nights in Arkansas to visit with friends -- we stayed in Conway only because it was closest to them but Petit Jean State Park was gorgeous. Not sure how far Lake Catherine or Lake Hamilton are from BR but sure was pretty.

our favorite weekend trip is to denver
direct flight from MSY on united thu or fri morning, tool around denver, maybe catch a baseball game, stock up at the dispensery, drive to evergreen or morrison and stay in a cabin on the river, catch a show at red rocks, see dinosaur ridge, hang out eat/drink, fly home on the direct light on sunday
