Vacation w/ kids this Summer - Thoughts about Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg Area

Looking for some vacation ideas this summer, that the kids would enjoy (8 and 5), that isn't Disney. Started looking at Pigeon Forge and the surrounding areas. What are your thoughts/recommendations for the area?

Kids that age have been their target demo for as long as I can remember.
Starter point. Also look at Gatlinburg.

I prefer Gatlinburg over Pigeon Forge.
Closer to the GSM Park, and everything in town is in walking distance.

It’s legit. There is a reason it has been a top summertime destination for families for decades,

Yes, it's closer to the park. But I prefer Pigeon Forge. Gatlinburg just felt so damn trashy. It felt like you took Bourbon Street and Times Square and made it redneck.
When I go again, I'll stay in a cabin somewhere nearby. What I couldn't find in Gatlinburg was a fairly quiet restaurant with a nice patio or view to sit and have a drink or 2. I'd rather sit on my balcony in a cabin. Also, lots of cabins are reasonably priced and have lots of games and entertainment for kids.

Dollywood is an awesome amusement park.
