Vacation Destinations Near Brevard, NC

Good afternoon, fine people of the Travel Board -- you've never let me down with great recommendations so I have come back in need of some help!
We are currently assessing our summer vacation options, and part of our trip needs to hinge on picking up one of our kids at a summer camp near Brevard NC on a Monday in June. So if we head out to NC the weekend before, we can get the kid on Monday morning, and then we have the whole rest of the week to spend as a family of 5 (three kids, ranging 7 to 14).
Ideally we'd like to rent a cabin in the mountains - any recommendations on what towns to focus on? I know there are lots of things to do in the mountains - rafting, hiking, ziplines, horseback, etc. There are so many towns in the eastern part of NC it's hard to really know where to land as a home base for the week.
Any suggestions on town and lodging would be much appreciated!

We just got back after having spent a week there. Brevard may just be singularly the best area to visit in NC.
Very popular part of the state so you may have some challenges finding a place. And before we start, remember we're still in a pandemic and COVID protocols are still in place. NC is a fairly restrictive state in that regard, so make sure you fully understand what some of the limitations might be. We got along just fine, but it's a point to consider.
Consider the Pisgah Inn. Maybe 45 minutes from Brevard area.
We were looking into these cabins.
Ended up renting this place. A a small house 8 miles outside of town. I can work anywhere, and since the WIFI was great, just worked until 3 or 4 then we'd go out hiking. Usually in the Dupont forest. SO many hiking trails and waterfalls to see. They were balling because of the rain fall. Almost went down Slidng Rock, one of my favorite places in the world, but at 38 degrees that day, nah.
Went to this great restaurant called Square Root downtown.
Tour the nearby Sierra Nevada Brewery.
Like camping? Davidson River is one of the great campgrounds in the State. Books up but you can make reservations.
PS: Went to Camp Pinnacle near Hendersonville as a kid!

I'd recommend looking into Highlands or Bryson City. Even Brevard would be fine. It's a cool little mountain town, though at a lower elevation than the other two I mentioned.

Lake Glenville near Cashiers is another good spot. We rented a 5 bedroom house there a few years ago. My son rented a 2 bed room house there once so they have some for a single family.

We rented a nice vrbo in that area last summer for a big crowd. I'll post it for when I have access to my computer.
Brevard was a fun town, and we planned the trip around white water rafting. The highlights of our trip was short hikes to waterfalls where the kids could swim up to the falls.

We were in Asheville last week and everything was slammed and hotels and Airbnb's were super expensive. Feels like that area is blowing up in popularity so would just make sure you book early.
There's awesome mountain biking in that area too ranging from beginner to super technical which the older kids might enjoy.

Place was in like-new condition. Plenty of room. Sliding Rock Falls is a must do. Lots of other hikes that lead to falls with swimming holes.
Looking back on it, we probably should have done the Biltmore.

When we tried to go in the early afternoon, it was already sold out. AND to just walk the grounds/trails etc. it was like $56/person.
Was there years ago and I guess it's worth it, but be prepared to pay.

We did the Biltmore in 2009.
Any reason to do it again? Or is it just a fascinating house that’s just 12 years older now?

quote:Seems like we do it about once a decade; mostly the wife’s idea. Last time, 2019 I think, we paid extra to do the roof tour. It is about an hour and you go onto the top floors, into the attic and out onto a roof top walk. A guide leads the tour and talks about the house. It was worth it.

With kids that age? Hell no. They won't appreciate it and you'll drop some serious coin doing it. Take them when they're older as it is a fascinating mansion to visit. The grounds are spectacular. You can rent Segways in the Village.
This trip? Gotta be about cool adventures. Life time memories.
That age, DEFINITELY #1 is Sliding Rock as noted. It will get crowded that time of year, so watch for the times. Maybe later in the day or first thing?
#2 in that area: Tubing on the Davidson River. Again popular area. Time of year. Can get crowded. Maybe go mid week. Early AMs etc. You'll figure it out.
#3: Try horseback riding in the Pisgah National Forest.
#4: Just tool around the Dupont Forest as noted. Great hiking. In the summer you can swim near many of the falls great time. GETS CROWDED!
#5: It'd be a drive to Bryson City. Maybe 1.5-2 hours. But Deep Creek is probably the greatest tubing in NC.

The only reason to do the Biltmore twice is to do the Christmas candlelight tour, which is fricking amazing.
Also, we rented a cabin in the Robbinsville area, which was very nice.

Nole Man - that cabin was open the time we'll be up there so we booked it! Thanks for the find.

Agreed - the place was awesome. And we went at Christmas so we did the candlelight tour. We had our two very young kids in tow, and they have no memory of it, but I remember the tour and experience being awesome. But no real desire to do it again with this age.
On the rest - thanks so much for the tips! I've added them to our trip planning doc.
Also - we are all about the lifetime memories. We did a 17-day road trip out west in 2019 and packed in so many awesome adventures the whole family still talks about it.

Question: Posted several, which one did you end up booking?

We booked the one you were researching but didn’t stay in - near Lake Glenville.

Expect a full trip report this summer!

To round out the trip - we are wondering if we can head from mountains to beaches for the last 3-4 nights of the swing. We could only get 6 nights at the cabin but still could add 3 more nights.
Looking at a trip over to NC or SC coast (we’ve done Hilton Head about a dozen times) or even down into GA.
Since you had a pile of great ideas for NC, any thoughts here?

You could. Lot of travel with kids. Probably about 6 hours drive from there.
How about looping back and staying at another location kind of on the way back?
How about Blue Ridge GA? ~ 2 hours away. On the way back. One of our other favorite areas to visit from here. Tubing. Swimming. Boating. Hiking. Great restaurants. Plenty of trip reports. Here's one recent one.
Detour to Chattanooga? Kids would love the Aquarium. Another recent trip report.
PS: Side note on the current plan...You're going to be real near Cashiers and Highlands. Wonderful small towns with some nice dining and shopping options. Lake Glenville is a great recreational option for boating and swimming. You will be about 1.5 hours or so from Brevard. AND anytime your in this region expect to drive a lot unless you just veg in the cabin!
