The family and I are vacationing in Roatan in two weeks. Anyone ever been there? I here the snorkeling is great, which is why I chose this destination. Any good snorkeling locals to recommend?

Where are you staying?
Snorkeling is fantastic in the right spots. There’s a shipwreck inside the reef that is great and anything near the reef is fantastic. Roatan is a premiere dive spot and great snorkeling generally goes with great diving.
There are a few great restaurants, some good ones and some that are just average bar food. That said, go to Cal’s Temporary Cantina. What Cal lacks in personality he makes up for in great cooking. Iron Shore Grill was also very good but pricey for the island.
Pretty much every bar on West Bay Beach has a 2 for $5 happy hour every day except when cruise ships are in. The monkey zip lining was a lot of fun and they allow you to do some tricks on the zip line so it isn’t the same old boring ride with your head up zip lining.
Enjoy. We’ve always enjoyed our time on Roatan.

Been a couple of times but was on a dive boat both times. Great diving and snorkeling, which is really the main reason to go there. There are some nice resorts on the west end I think, and I would work with wherever you are staying to decide on snorkeling locations or maybe boat trips. Should be great snorkeling close to shore.
Be aware though that Roatan is rough in spots. I wouldn't set out and explore the island on my own, especially with family in tow. The Bay Islands are nowhere near as dangerous as the mainland, but don't kid yourself--there is a fair amount of crime down there. Stay in your resort/west end area and you should be fine.

I have been to Roatan as a port on a Caribbean cruise. We spent the day at Tabyana Beach on West Bay. It was a beautiful beach with white sand and clear blue water. We spent a lot of time snorkeling. It was not the most spectacular snorkeling in the world, but it was very nice with gold coral and schools of colorful fish. You will have fun.

RE: Dangerous
Just stay out of Coxen Hole and you'll be fine. It's a rough town.

I went years ago before cruise ships. Was a great vacation. The diving was great back when I went we stayed at fantasy island and was nice was only place on island with ac back then. I kinda wish we would have stayed at Anthony's key though. West end was great. Fantasy island had good shore dives a nice wreck you could swim out to and a old plane. It was a all inclusive trip with all the diving you could do. West end was the best dive we did. All the walls are great diving. I did rent a jeep and we went off exploring island one day. Back when I went only one paved road on island and went to the end not paved it was pristine and beautiful. only thing bad on the trip was Taca airlines. Back then no light at roatan airport and our plane was delayed and had to spend the first night on the mainland is some best western in lovely downtown something that started with a T. Only there one night. While sitting in the hotel bar looked out saw police with machine guns patrolling the town square. Overall was the best vacation I ever went on and the price was great. Coxen hole is a dump for sure.

The east end of the island is still only partially paved and it hasn't had electricity for that long (got it around 2015).

Well, this island just leapfrogged several others on my list of 2020 travels.

Many times ... best place = Anthony's Key north part of the island..
you can dive the caves close by and the "eel garden" ,besides the reefs
Don't be surprised if they give you a "test" as to diving ability, even if certified.
A group of us from BR would go every year ..MANY YEARS AGO, when it was still undeveloped.
The north side of the island is prettier te south side is where the cruise lines etc go.

Where are yall staying? We rented a house on West Bay Beach a couple years ago and the snorkeling was amazing right off the beach. We saw sea turtles, sting rays, an octopus, moray eels, and tons of tropical fish just snorkeling on our own.
We stayed right next to Las Rocas and ate there almost daily.
We had a house last time we went, but I'm thinking next time we'll just rent one of their bungalows.

I know you're not a drinker but I have THE best bar at the end of the world on Roatan for you. It's at the extreme east end of the island. Voted best seafood on Trip Advisor. lol

Great spot to stay. When you walk towards the dock you'll see a group of condos on your left. That's where we stay when we go to Roatan.
There are a lot of food choices where you're staying. Most of them are barfood but there are a couple of very good ones. Iron Shore Grill is all the way down the beach past the dock. Iguanas sun on the rocks down there during the day.
Enjoy and don't forget to come home with a RoaTAN!

I highly recommend walking to Las Rocas on the north end of West Bay Beach for breakfast a couple of mornings. Our plan was to just cook in our rental for breakfast everyday and even stocked up a the grocery store, but when we found out good and cheap breakfast was at Las Rocas, we ate there everyday! Don't know if you're a coffee drinker, but they have the best my wife and I have ever tasted. There is also a restaurant named "Bite on the Beach" right next to Las Rocas that throws scraps to the moray eels every night at dark. The eels are so used to it that they show up right at dark everyday.
But like Va Buckeye said the little restaurant/bar over the water was some of the best food I've ever had. And talk about fresh, our driver and my family were the only people there. We were seated and a boat showed up with the fish they were cooking for us that day. My daughter was intrigued by the pig tied to a tree out front. The owner of the place was from Washington state if I remember right. He visited Roatan and decided he loved it so much that he stayed and opened a restaurant/bar.
The only way we found this place was we asked our driver to bring us to the best food on the island. Just typing this and going through these pictures has me itching to go back.
One more thing, do some research on bug repellent. The gnats are bad at night. You need a high % DEET spray.

I see you found La Sirena too. What a great little dive bar to sit and do absolutely nothing and love it.

We were there on a cruise in December and went to Little French Key. Went snorkeling for about an hour and had a nice time.
