How much do you care about other people looking at your backpack and judging you? On a scale of 0 to a million. Be honest.
I would say 1 to 2 at beast. I’m moving to Europe so that’s also going to be a factor.

I think this is the one I have. Can't remember the exact model. It has the detachable daypack that goes under the seat in front and the big pack can go overhead. I've used and abused it for 8 years now. I've taken it on multi-day hikes in the woods, and taken it all over the world for regular travel. Everything still works on it just like the day I got it.
And yeah, it is just a touch bigger than official carry-on dimensions, but I have never had an issue with it on any airline. it has just enough flexibility to fit overhead.

Ya the newer version apparently "fixed" this issue to remove the doubt and a reason for an airline to stop you.
I almost talked myself into upgrading but didn't. The other big change is they removed the zipper for the daypack attachment. The new pack just uses the straps to hold the daypack, which is how I've been using mine since my daypack attachment zipper broke.
The only other issue I've had is my plastic zipper rings snapping from fatigue but the zippers themselves are fine.
I never could figure out how not to have the shoulder straps hang so low off the packs (excess strap after the strap adjuster/slider not used if you know what I mean) but that could be a me problem.

Thank you everyone for the recommendations. I went with an Osprey Tropos.

people carrying 40+ liter packs: do you get shite from flight attendants for trying to put a "backpack" in the overhead bins?
Occasionally, and it really pisses me off, because it doesn't fit under the seat in front of me. I just ask them if I should have put it inside a larger roller bag so that it would qualify to go overhead? Because I can do that if they want.
Unbelievably stupid position for the airlines to take.

they kinda have to restrict overhead bins to roller bags because otherwise the usual suspects will stuff the bins with purses, tote bags and boxes of aunt Sally’s pralines

Why shouldn't they be able to do that? What's so sacred about roller bags, other than it's the entitled business travelers that they are sucking up to? (really, no offense meant, that was me for a few decades). Sorry, but I'm just over this nonsense and will put my backpack in a roller bag if it's what is needed. But I'm not going to eat my knees on a long flight so someone can put a bag that is twice as large in the overhead.
This is a situation that is just dumb as hell, and created by the airlines.

Osprey Porter 46. Take it everywhere. Up to 5 day trips.

Fully agree. Have flown almost 1M miles (mainly Delta) over the years, primarily for business. Without status, it can be nerve racking and brutal sometimes. Half the time I just check a bag (or wait for them to now ask for volunteers at the gate). It's a stressor and it shouldn't be.
I know it shouldn't get to me, but what frosts me even more these days is these a-holes that are 10-20 rows behind me and they put their bag in the bin assigned to my row and keep on moving, leaving me pimped.
BUT..
It's an economic viablity thing for the airlines. It is what it is right now unless you want to pay more for earlier boarding.
HOWEVER,
Just flew Alaska Airlines for the first time out to Seattle. Enjoyable flight. Well run. They're supposed one of the first airlines to expand bin space and it shows. (NOW, if we could get these frikkin' idiots to just put their bags in vertically, we'd be all set!

They suck up to us because we do things like buy a one way ticket from Brussels to Tokyo in coach for $5,600 last minute, lol. I wish that was a lie.
The goddamned coats flying into NYC and ORD from frequent travelers were far worse than a Cello or a 23" roller.
