Headed to Cowtown for a job interview on Wednesday. I'll fly into Dallas at 2:20pm and have all afternoon and evening to explore to get to know the cultural and fun parts of the city.

I know the cattle drive is at 4pm. Thinking about going to it just to see the novelty of it, but I'm sure there are better things to do.

Thursday is my interview and it'll either be at 11am or 2pm. Should find out today which one. Flight out is 8pm.

I'll be staying in Fairmount.

UPDATE: Mostly drove around town and explored. Stayed in Fairmount, which was beautiful but still a bit run down. Not sure my wife would have liked it.

West Magnolia was awesome. Ate at Heim and got the two meat combo with brisket and bacon burnt ends with green chile mac and cheese and collard greens. My first time having Texas brisket, and it was really good. The bacon burnt ends were a bit too sweet for my tastes.

Got ice cream from Melt right after. It was good but some college girls were there talking about farting while eating bean ice cream. Kinda ruined the moment for me.

Roanoke seems like a cool little restaurant spot, but I didn't get to eat there.

Went for a run Thursday morning at the Trinity River Trails near downtown. It was crazy humid before the storms rolled in, but I liked the scenery. Only thing that concerned me was that it wasn't as empty as I thought. There were no cars in the parking lots but I passed some sketchy looking folks on the running route. One girl had scabs all over her face, so maybe that was a bad place to go?

I wanted some authentic Mexican and read about a restaurant called Molcajetes. Not to be confused with Los Molcajetes - this was a small joint in La Gran Plaza located southeast of TCU's campus. At first I was a bit disappointed as it was a mall, but holy hell that was by far the best Mexican food I've ever had. I got two sopes with carne asada and two tacos al pastor with rice and beans. The people inside weren't all that patient with me, and I got a little weirded out by the dudes with tattoos all over their faces staring at me. But I was in euphoria gorging on that food. Cash only BTW.

Afterwards I walked through the plaza a bit and wandered into El Mercado, which is essentially where half of the mall has been walled off to simulate a street market experience in Mexico. I was...out of place. But it was neat seeing it. I only wish I had some more money on me to buy some things and not just be the weird white dude snapping pics on his phone.

After that, I tried going to Sundance Square but must have missed where it really was. I followed the signs downtown but suddenly I was exiting downtown. Decided to drive through University Park and see the George Bush Presidential Library before going to Dallas Love. University Park was absolutely gorgeous (also - the neighborhoods surrounding TCU's campus are gorgeous as well). The Presidential Library was lackluster. Maybe the landscape company was scheduled for today? The grounds were kinda overgrown and unkempt. It was closed though, so I didn't get a chance to peak inside.

All in all a good 30 hour trip.

Fairmount is great. See Magnolia bars and restaurants. Hard to go wrong. Heim BBQ is very trendy. Shinjuku has great sushi. Cannon Chinese.

Walk around sundance square and get a feel for the downtown, which is very impressive. Drive around TCU campus and Museum/West 7th district.

Unless you are entertained by the very hammed up cowboy theme, you can skip stockyards. Not many FW natives ever go up there except for concerts. Go take a tour of Wild Acre brewery and/or TX distillery.

As others have said, the Magnolia area is cool. Grab a few beers at the Magnolia Motor Lounge. Cool owner and people and they always have great live music. The Rodeo Goat has good burgers and Mash'd is a cool spot that has some decent food.

Only been once.

Ate lunch at Joe T. Garcia's
Ate dinner at Reata

Sat outside both places and enjoyed both very much.

I'm sure there is better Tex-Mex at some hole in the wall, but the cheese enchiladas at Joe T's were great.

Bring cash if you go to Joe T. Also check out Reata for a great Tex-Mex Steak House.

If you are going to the Stockyards Cooper's BBQ is a short walk from there.

I think Joe T's is a must. I've seen it mentioned on multiple sites. Seems like I might enjoy staying in the Fairmount area and not really need to go someplace different outside of exploring neighborhoods.

Average food. I wouldn't waste your time. Its a big tourist place which is why you see it mentioned a lot.

They have some great art museums and the Amon Carter is free. They have a bunch of Remington and Russell paintings of the old american west as well as some more modern stuff. The Japanese Garden near the Zoo is really nice and the zoo is world class.

The Bearded Lady in the Magnolia district has good food and a great beer selection.

For mexican, Los Paisanos or Los Asaderos (both in the Stockyards area) are way more authentic and have better food than the gringo tourist mecca of Joe Ts. Joe Ts is good for a marg sitting on the patio if the weather is nice.

Someone mentioned Magnolia Motor Lounge which is a good spot for live music.....its in the west 7th area near the museums, not the Magnolia area though. Just down the street is American Gardens which has a great outdoor area to have a beer.

Worth keeping in mind for any visitor:

Stockyards are not in any way indicative of life in Fort Worth, except for the few people that make a boatload of money off it. It's more similar to a theme park without rides.

Joe T's is not considered good Mexican food, but the atmosphere is cool.

We stopped at Joe T Garcia’s last year on a road trip. We made the mistake of eating inside, and it was a nice spring day.

The food was a little better than average but not as good as I expected based on what I had seen on TV.

I would go again but would eat outside. We were there at lunch, dinner might be better.

We were also there in 2014 and walked around the stockyard, saw the cattle drive, etc. If I were going for a job interview this would not be a high priority for me, especially if I thought I had a real shot at the job.

Everyone covered some great spots. My only other advice would be to UBER/LYFT it everywhere. Texas cops don't play with DWIs like here in Louisiana.

Thanks for telling about your trip.

We went to the Bush Library and really enjoyed it. The 9-11 exhibit was moving and the full scale replica of the Oval Office was outstanding.

As I recall the landscaping was not impressive but I assumed that was because it was fairly new, when we went. Maybe it is by design; sort of a West Texas arid look?
