How bad does it suck? Will have kids in tow.

Worth the extra dollars to fly straight into aspen?

$97 vs $400 airline tickets.

Drive not bad. Flight to Aspen can be bumpy, you have to corkscrew down into the airport which can come with turbulence.

What time of year and what day of the week?

I would probably pony up the extra $300 and fly but it is worth mentioning that when Aspen gets weather you are not taking off or landing. They don't mess around with that.

$300 to fly the family from Denver to Aspen? Fly. You will spend $300 on coffee once you are there.

No.

$97 to fly from Nola to Denver.
Then drive to Aspen (3.5hrs)
$400ish to fly direct from BR to Aspen.

I'd fly but it's just me, multiply that #300 difference x 4 and you're starting to get into driving territory. Surprised you can get BTR-ASE direct

So Thursday to Sunday, you have to add a 3-4 hr cushion on your return drive Sunday for ski traffic. It can get really shitty. If there is weather it can get worse. The drive is pretty though.

There is a 0% chance of a commercial route from BR to Aspen direct. None.

Yeah there isn’t even a direct to ASE out of MSY.

The cheapest flights from BTR to ASE connects at IAH.

No sweat.

I never mess with I70 on a Sunday. Number one rule of visiting ski country west of Denver. Change your plans and come back on Monday. It’ll make all the difference in the world. Trust in this wisdom.

I agree with not driving back on a Sunday. If you do head back to Denver on Sunday make sure you leave early.

We’ve done it both ways. Problem with flying in to Aspen is that there’s a 50/50 chance that the airport gets shutdown or the flights are delayed. We’ve had better luck driving. Get a 4 wheel drive Tahoe type vehicle with a DVD player and let the kids watch movies. By the time you make the connection and make the 2nd flight, your talking about less than a 2hr difference. If there’s any delays, then it takes longer to fly.

I would just drive, it’s a fun drive. Like others have said, don’t come back on a Sunday. 70 has horrible traffic even during summer Sundays, much less winter Sundays which has considerably more people than the summer and considerably more chance of traffic accidents.

It's not a bad drive. The beauty of the mountains will keep you entertained and the interstate through Glenwood Canyon is really nice. I would say take the route over independence pass as it's quicker and even prettier but it will be shut for the winter.

To each his own but for my family we'd rather pay the money and fly direct. That is a 3.5 hr drive if you don't hit traffic getting through Denver, if there isn't an accident on interstate, if the tunnel is operational, if the pass is open, etc etc

If you aren't used to driving in snowy conditions it can be miserable. I've white knuckled for 2+ hours with kids in the car and I told myself I would never do that again.
