We are flying in in February to sailfish out of Los Suenos.

We arrive on a Sunday night at 8:40PM and are staying at the Hampton Inn by the airport before catching a shuttle to our resort the next morning.

Is San Jose nightlife safe for foreigners ?

I'm sure we will catch a buzz on the flight down and want to keep it up. 3 males, 3 females

Nope. It's called boy's town for a reason.

J/K No clue about San Jose specifically. I've been to Los Suenos a few times. Fishing is excellent. Two trips ago was in Feb and we caught about twenty sails every day we went out. If you catch something other than sails, keep it, and have a restaurant on the beach cook it.
Take a right out of Los Suenos and a left at the end of the road. Restaurant is called The Pelican I think. 2 for 1 ritas and a "You hook'em, We cook'em" deal.

What else besides fishing? We went surfing this past fall. It was awesome. Used a group called Vista Guapa. I highly recommend them.

On your way into Los Suenos, stop at the bridge and feed the crocodiles. It's something unique to see. 25 crocodiles sitting in one cluster. There will be a dude there with a bag of chicken. Throw him $10 or $15. Grab a pina colada at the little shop there. They are fire.

The surfing class at Vista Guapa was really awesome. It's pretty damn hard, so make sure you are up for it. I made the mistake of running 6 miles that morning and then doing the surf lesson. I felt like I had completed a 1/2 ironman. I was wrecked.

Did you reserve a golf cart for the Resort? I'm not really sure how it works. I just know we have had one each time I went there. I guess it isn't necessary if you're staying in the hotel part and not a condo or house.

I would say no. We only stayed two nights in San Jose on our CR trip. The night we flew in and the night before we flew out. We were told exploring the city during the day was fine, but you were best off to just stay at your hotel at night. That there are areas that not even their police venture to at night.

We were tired after traveling all day when we got there as well. The small hotel we stayed at had a tiny bar/pool area so we just relaxed there and had a few drinks before going to bed.

OP is travelling with 3 Guys and 3 Girls

Unless the girls are into girls.

San Jose in general isn't high on the party list and the potential for crime in the wrong parts of town could put a real damper on the vacation in CR.

Yeah. Get a buzz on the plane, power snatch when you get to your room, and rest up for a fun few days.

Tourist hotels by the airport are the least safe place in Costa Rica. There has been a lot of crime targeting tourists at these hotels so the hotels do have beefed up security. I love Costa Rica but would not recommend San Jose at night.

That's really a shame. My wife and I went to Costa Rica about 23 years ago as a stop on our honeymoon. We have very fond memories of the place. Unlike the other Central and South American countries we visited on the trip, we saw no panhandlers or homeless people. At the time it seemed like a really safe place. We were told that the high school graduation rate was over 90%. Everyone was super friendly and the attitudes were like small town America. Of course that was before the casinos moved in and it began to advertise itself as a party place.

To be fair...it's really just San Jose that you have to watch out for. The rest of CR seemed relatively safe. And everyone was really friendly. We spent 9 days there for our honeymoon and loved our time there. I would go back in a heartbeat to CR for a visit. Just a beautiful place with some awesome people.

However, theft is a problem there so you always have to watch out for that. NEVER leave anything out in the open in your vehicle, even locked, or it will likely be broken into. And don't be flashy and don't make yourself a target(carelessly walking around with your expensive IPhone in hand, etc). Just use some common street sense. We were also really careful to always lock ALL of our valuables in the hotel safe whenever we left the room.

And also to be fair a lot of the crime is not from Costa Ricans. There is a lot of poverty in central america so Costa Rica has had an influx of Nicaraguans, Hondurans, etc. who are desperate for money and they tend to head to San Jose. When I go to Costa Rica I get out of San Jose as soon as possible. Last time there I drove all over the country for two weeks. San Jose is really the only place that feels risky in places.

One thing that I thought was entertaining in San Jose was how on the weekends there people gather near the airport.....to watch the planes land.

We saw bleachers set up with tons of people with their kids just sitting there. Saw street food vendors walking up and down selling food to people. You would think it was some big event or festival going on. Nope...just Sunday near the San Jose airport

When we first landed and were riding in the taxi we saw that. I thought at first maybe some big celebrity was landing or something. Again..nope...just watching planes land.

Be careful in San Jose at night. Day time is fine. Most places are safe but it's WHERE and WHEN you are in San Jose. You won't miss anything in San Jose if you stay at the hote. Have a family member living in Los Suenos and we do business there. They lived in San Jose for a while but he wasn't the one going out late at night. Los Suenos is nice. You'll enjoy the fishing. Fished there last time in 2015. Been there a few times with family. There are awesome things to do in CR but it all cost money. If you got money, it's a hell of a time. Look into the cliff paragliding. They will put you in the harness with them and it'll be fun. You'll figure out what you want to do when you see all the different tours to go on. If you have to chose just one, I would chose the "multi-tour" in Guanacaste. It's tubing, repelling, rock climbing, horse riding, hot springs etc. It's a full day and unforgettable. I go every time I go to CR. It's 3 hours from Los Suenos but worth every minute. Costs about $75 per person but I can't imagine not telling you about it. They'll pick you up at the resort and drive and feed you. It would be a big miss if you didn't go. Enjoy your trip. PS. Search for waterfall trip with "Mike". He's the best. Worth using him and plan to tip him. He's a great guide.

I've been to Jaco about 10 times because my best friend lives there. Jaco is a party town full of drugs and hookers. If you are going with a group of guys you will have a blast. If you are going with women, you will be miserable.

Los Suenos is not anywhere close to San Jose (but I'm sure you know that).

thanks for all the help

We are actually staying at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Central Pacific in Puntarenas and shuttling into Los Suenos for our fishing. The third leg of the Triple Crown is happening while we are there so the fricking Marriott Los Suenos sold out over a year in advance. I almost booked on a Friday, went back Monday to book and it was sold out because they announced the tournament dates that morning.

any does or donts for our two days in the Puntarenas area?

Been there. Big resort. Might be the most expensive resort in the entire country (congrats). Casino on site. Won't have to lift a finger for anything!

Negative. When I was there, a guy got assaulted with a crowbar when he was walking back to our hotel. He was a fricking Marine (he won the fight, btw, which is why I heard about it).

Just watch your shite in San Jose.
