Tell me about Salida, CO

I’ve seen Salida mentioned on here in several other threads about Colorado or mountain town vacations. Some of this has certainly peaked my interest. Our family spends a few weeks in Breckenridge every July, and I’m considering driving over to Salida for a couple of days/nights on the front end of this trip. Trying to figure out if it is worth it or not.
Where is the best location to stay? What are the must visit restaurants, bars, breweries? Any activities you would recommend with small children (ex. they’re too young to go rafting)?
Appreciate all the info and advice!

once you go to BV and Salida you’ll never go back to Breckenridge. “Normal” towns not resorts, much lower key, all families in summer, collegiate peaks right there along with the Arkansas River. Much cheaper too

If you want to ball out, stay at the Surf Hotel down on the river. Sort of a Seaside vibe to it. There are lots of more economical options as well as plenty of AirBnBs.

We stopped in Salida for 2 days during the FIBARK Festival FIBARK in June, weather was great, plenty of activities taking place. We stayed out on Rainbow BLVD. at Comfort Inn and took a cab/uber ride over to the festival as opposed to trying to find parking. We ate at Boathouse Cantina on the river, Amicas Pizza Microbrew, a food truck a the festival. We enjoyed ourselves and will plan another trip just for the festival. Forget to mention they have a SONIC in case you need to check knuckles.
