We stayed at Tulemar in Quepos and then went to Arenal and stayed at Tabacon Thermal Spas.
Both were great and staff spoke pretty good English.

Traveling around was fine - but the trip from coast to mountains is a bit hairy. Roads are fine and drivers are fairly courteous but realize a trip of 40 to 50 miles is probably a 3 to 4 hour drive, We did get a GPS from the rental car agency - which was a Huawei phone with google maps. We had a passenger sit beside the driver and call out "Sweeping left followed by a hard right" type instructions so that we could drive close to traffic speeds.
Otherwise we'd have been driving like 10 miles an hour. Most bridges once outside the city are single lane. One side will have a yield sign as you approach - the other side has right of way. If you have the yield you wait until there's an opening and then proceed.
The only problem is that most bridges are just outside of mountain curves - so once you "think" you have an opening, you start to go and then a dump truck or bus coming 60 mph appears around the bend.
Best practice is to just floor it and try to get across before something comes.
The only encounter with non-english speakers was stopping for gas in a remote area. Stations are only full serve and usually semi-hot young girls. She spoke 2 words of English - "Full?" at the start and "Ready?" when it was time to pay. So we managed.

I went to Costa Rica for my honeymoon over 30 years ago and it sounds like other than some fancier resorts it has not changed at all. Scary drive from main city to the Pacific coast. Horrible roads. Amazing natural beauty. Incredibly nice people. Glad to hear it is still very safe.

We flew SW into Liberia (Pacific side) during Mardi Gras, the resort was full of Canadians. We had a blast, did one day trip.

I took my boys a few years ago, while our trip was geared for offshore fishing, we found plenty to do in the evenings and off days. Manuel Antonio, and we rented a Villa that’s inside the preserve (VRBO iirc). It was wonderful, monkeys and all sorts of birds right off our patio, and plenty of good places to eat and bars on the beach for sunset views. Flew into San Jose and had a driver pick us up, the rest of the trip we took Ubers. It was a fantastic trip.
We flew out of Quepos on a puddle jumper to Panama City, then directly into MSY. Clearing Customs has never been easier. The airport was under construction, so we took off out of a sugar cane field, I felt like Indiana Jones.

Looking to spend a week in Costa Rica, will be our first time there. Looking for something on the beach either resort or airbnb. Any recommendations? Also best way to get in and out back to the states?

My favorite part of Costa Rica is the Montezuma area, with Cabo Blanco, Mal Pais close. Look at resorts near Montezuma. They’ll have an idea on transportation.
