Hard to answer without knowing Mom's fitness level & interests. Does she like walking/light hiking, or is she sedentary/mobility challenged? Mountain village sounds nice but not if she has trouble with stairs/steep streets.

she's making 70, but still fairly fit, but obviously not 30 year old fit; they like walking

What about going over to Salzburg? Does she like The Sound of Music?

Salzburg / Berchtesgaden is your answer. Maybe Zurich.

Romantic Road, walled cities and such in the heart of Germany.

Your mom is going by herself? Renting a car is the best way to see the Alps. If she is not going to rent a car, her best bet would be Salzburg or Innsbruck with day trips on bus trips probably.

I liked the city of Salzburg better but its on the foothills of the Alps. Innsbruck is actually in the Alps. Plenty to do in both places with a side trip or 2 for 4-5 days.

Munich is an under rated city to visit, great city especially in the fall.

I'd suggest more time in Strasbourg. It's such a great city, and they'd be really close to Colmar and the Alsace wine region villages. September may be around harvest time so there could even be festivals in some of the villages.

Innsbruck or Salzburg would be great 3rd stops. All 4 are great towns, will be a good trip.

I agree with the Romantic Road, Rothenberg, Wurtzberg.....all of this is back in the general direction of Frankfurt, so less time will be wasted getting back to that city for departure.

thanks for the replies, she's going with her husband, retired vietnam vet, retired avondale shipyards, full cajun, never been to europe, i'm really excited for both of them

in the end, i think gonna rent a car out munich and send them through bavaria, for a meandering 4 days

thanks again

Sit them down and seriously explain to them about lane protocols on the autobahn.

Also explain to them the speed signage and that there are ticket cameras there.

In Salzburg The Sound of Music tour industry there is strong. I’ve used Panorama Tours (Link) there two years ago and they were wonderful.

Also warn them about pickpockets. Very real concern. Almost got me in Colmar, caught his hand pulling my wallet out of my pocket. A pair working together. Beautiful mountain villages all around Strasbourg. Cool little WW2 museum about the Colmar Pocket. Small vineyards in every village. People in area love Americans( they realize we saved their asses in WW2.

Hallstatt in Austrian Lake District. Small town in a picture perfect setting. About an hour train ride from Salzburg.
