Starting to book trip to Italy - I need help

I am planning on going early June, I've already found my flight, round trip, $1030 each, NO to Rome and back.
The trip is June 4th to June 13th.
I plan to start in Rome (5th-7th), spend two nights, spend three nights in Venice (9th-12th), and of course my last night in Rome on the 12th to catch flight next day. That leaves two nights in the middle. Any recs on where to go.
Also looking for recs on decent hotels in Rome & Venice under $100 a night.
Thanks in advance for the help.

After doing some quick research, I realized there is no such thing as a hotel in Venice under $100 a night. There are some hostels.
I ended up booking 3 nights with AirBnB for an entire apartment on the water in Venice for $105 a night.
What area in Rome should I stay and what's a good two night stay between Rome and Venice?
***Edit***
Looks like it will be Florence for the middle two nights since it is half way between Rome and Venice. I have now booked a two night stay in Florence thru AirBnB.

My suggestion if possible would be to fly out of Venice. I know you said you booked, but see how much it will cost to change that. It's going to cost you half a day at least and a couple hundred each to get back to Rome. You are better off putting that money into flying out of Venice and making your life easier. I would think you could fly out of Venice for $1400 each, I'd gladly pay that.
Then spend 3-4 nights in Rome to start, go somewhere for 2-3 nights, and finish with 2-3 nights in Venice. Train in Italy is very cheap and easy, but your time is still valuable and less travel is still better.
I would recommend somewhere more in the country away from tourists. Venice and Rome are very very touristy, stop in the middle somewhere quiet.

Exactly. It makes zero sense to me to start the trip in Rome and be in Venice on day 12 with the need to get back to Rome to fly out on the same day. That sounds like a hideous travel day to me.

Florence is a must.
Southern Italy (Amalfi Coast, Carpi, Naples, etc) is a must visit and it might be even better than typical Rome and Venice, especially during the summer.

Here's another suggestion for you, fly to venice immediately upon your arrival. You can very likely get a cheap Ryan Air or whatever flight from Rome to Venice. Sucks adding that extra leg, but I 100% promise you will be happy. I bet the one way flights are under $100, or there about.
Then start your trip in Venice, and end it in Rome.
That's 100% what I would do all day and twice on Sunday. $80 each, one way. All day long that's your best option. That's $160 for one less day of travel, but more importantly gives you like 8 extra hours of enjoyable vacation.

I just got back from a similar trip. We went down to Positano for a few days then took the train back to Rome for the return flight. If possible, just fly out of Venice.
Train tickets are at least $75 each, plus a cab to the train, 3.5hrs of travel, and another cab once in Rome.

Please tell me you haven't booked your flights yet... I can get you a multicity ticket into Rome then out of Venice for even cheaper than your $1030 on your exact dates...
LINK
If you have booked your flights and you're within the 24 hr mark, cancel your tickets or call and have them change your ticket to what's in the link above. You can fly on Delta or American for this!!!

I did look at flying to Rome and flying home from Venice, it was nearly double, but that was all through Delta Airlines. I thought about flying from Venice to Rome on the 13th, but I didn't want to be rushed. I figured taking the train back early on the 12th and enjoying Rome one more day. It's only a three hour train ride. I would nearly that long in the airport/flight.
I see EURail tickets for just Italy is only $200 for me and my daughter and it is good for 3 days.

I have not booked the flight yet, but your link is basically the flight I am taking. It's $1030 or so, after taxes and fees.
As for flying to Venice as soon I land in Rome, it's another $150+. I can buy three-day train passes for the two of us for nearly that much.
As for my OP, what area should I stay while in Rome?

So just so we're on the same page.
Using the google flights link above, you can fly from New Orleans to Rome by NYC, Charlotte, Philly (depending on personal preference) on June 4th, arriving June 5th.
The others on here have had suggestions for how you get from Rome to Venice
Middle few nights are up to you
Did you want to return from Venice then on June 12th rather than flying back to Rome to return to the US on the 13th? I can update the link above if you want to do that

I'm as cheap as anyone, and I know you can. But you'll already be at the airport in rome, you wait a couple of hours for your next flight and its a 60 minute flight.
The train ride is only 3 hours, but that's another trip to the train, another day of packing and un packing, and another day of going from the train to the hotel and checking in.
If you were working your way in a circle, certainly I've done that. But traveling in a line, its so much better to fly into your city you are starting, and flying home from your last city. Believe me, been there, done that, got the t-shirt multiple times and finally learned from my mistakes.

Airbnb has many places in the center of Rome for $100/night. The majority of the sites are on the east bank of the river except for Vatican City. I would stay somewhere south of Villa Borghese, north of the Forum, and west of the train station.

This is what I'm not understanding. The link I have above gets him from Nola to Rome, spends a few nights there, then works his way down to Venice with a few nights in-between, and finally leaving from Venice back to Nola (not through Rome). Am I missing something? Going to and from airports on a trip like this sounds like it's just adding extra hassle

Ok, I only looked at the top part of your link. I didn't realize you had Venice to NO as the return trip.
When I called Delta and tried to do the same, it was super expensive, like $3000 each.
I will look into this.
I actually cannot book any flights right now until I have my exact days. I want the days above but we haven't picked vacations yet at work for next year. As soon as I schedule the days off, I'm picking the flight. I'm pretty sure I will get these days. First round of vacation picks are usually all holidays.

All good. When you get your vacation dates approved, just page me on here and I can return with updated options. We're still a good ways away from your travel so the prices may even go down for what we're trying to book!

I'm going to make a suggestion.
Up your budget or save a little. You seem to really be pinching pennies on this (a hostel with your daughter? Really?). Trips like this are for splurging a little. Stay in a place that's a little better. We stayed in an incredible little hotel near St. Mark's for around 150 euro a night in Venice.
A $100 a night budget for a hotel over there is silly. You're going to be staying in a shithole if you can find something at that price.

I've decided to do AirBnB instead of hotels. I was never planning on using a hostel. I'm getting entire apartments for $100 or less through AirBnB. I did AirBnB on my last trip and loved it. My budget for this trip will be around $4500. That's $2000 in flights, <$1000 in AirBnB, ~$300 in train tickets, and ~$1000 in spending money (which is probably higher than I will spend). We are planning on doing two things, eat & photograph (plus ride a gondola for $75). We will do one nice restaurant, but the rest will be hole in the wall restaurants, which will probably be better than the nice restaurant.

Through in a few dollars for skip the line at the Vatican.

You shouldn't be paying over $650 for roundtrip from Nola to Rome.
Use Scotts Cheap Flights.
Seriously, if you have a budget, wait until the ticket pops up, you have plenty of time. And in the very very very small chance you don't find any at all, then book it for the full price of $1030.
