Sonoma in August

Trying to plan something for my wife's 30th birthday. Decided Sonoma would be a pretty good trip for her, since she likes wine and good food.
I am currently looking for suggestions on places to stay, eat and wineries to visit. We are not wine experts or snobs so we are not beholden to have to visit any signature places unless they are can't miss kinds of things. She would probably like some of the smaller operations anyway.
I am trying to stay under $250-$300 a night at the most. I may be limiting myself, but that is the budget. Maybe a nice airbnb that someone may have stayed in.

What days are you looking to go, and for how long?
I’ve been there many times as my brother lives in the area.

Stay in Healdsburg. It's basically the meeting point of the Russian River, Alexander, and Dry Creek Valleys, which will provide the opportunity to try a number of different styles of wines. Healdsburg has fantastic restaurants. Stay near the square.
We've stayed here: Grandma's Cottage and loved it. Very easy walk to great dining.
Wineries:
Kokomo - very casual tasting room, reasonable prices.
Sanglier - really nice wines, great tasting room on the square, reasonable prices.
Lynmar Estate - do the highest level tasting.
Merry Edwards - nice pinots
Laurel Glen - love their sonoma mountain cabs
Williams Selyem - good tasting. very good wines. pricey.
Moshin - cool, casual tasting. Good stuff.
Unti - really nice Italian varietal wines. Casual tasting room.
Small Vines - fantastic stuff. Make an appointment early.
Idlewild - very nice Italian varietals.
Some restaurants in Healdsburg that I recommend:
Dry Creek Kitchen
Vallette
Bravas

Had to add a few.
Out towards forestville there are some good ones too. Diavolas in Geyserville is great too.
August can get pretty warm (100 to 110F) so check the weather before you pack.
And yes...stay near the square. That way us locals know where to avoid.

just returned from Yountville, just north of Napa. I would definitely recommend the area. We stayed at the napa valley lodge and resort, it was right around 300 a night but you may be going at a more expensive time.
Schramsberg was a great tour!
unless you REALLY never get tired of wine, I'd consider doing a night or two in San Fran. After two full days we pretty much had our fill and spent some time in San Fran doing a few touristy things.

Granted, I really love wine, but my last trip was 9 days of full time tasting between Sonoma, Napa, and Paso but I still wanted more time.

I might push this back to December, seems like I'm late on planning it. Is December an ok time to visit, weather wise?

Do November, if possible. The fall colors are gorgeous in November, but the leaves will have fallen from the vines in December.

It can be really nice or really rainy. My favorite time of year here is March thru May. After mid-June everything turns brown.

Yea, I'm not a wine drinker. But there are some great beer spots in Sonoma too. Bear Republic in Heldsburg, Russian River in Santa Rosa and Lagunitas in Petaluma.
