I signed up for for AA because I have four round trip tickets in May. Do they cost money to get perks or is it just how many mile you get? What about access to the lounges, I have access to USO lounges where I can find them.
I really know nothing about them, and I am not getting their credit card.
I kind of feel like there should be a sticky on this.

You and me both, other than the pre-flight welcome for the advantage member message and the CC spiel I know nothing about them.

You’ll earn miles. Only on the flight for yourself. Miles go to individuals. You don’t get them for all four ticket unless you are the passenger on all four tickets. It’s pretty simple.
If you want Admirals Club access you can buy a day pass. They don’t let every member in just because they have a mileage account. You get membership by buying it or by earning a high status level which you probably won’t approach unless you’re a business traveler or you do runs to earn status.

So no real advantage if you don't fly a ton.

You accumulate miles. The credit card bonuses are what get you award flights. You can do it by flying and earning miles but the miles expire unless you have a catalyst to keep them from expiring. I get 2-3 award flights a year.

I’m not sure about AA, but with United, they don’t expire as long as you have any activity every 18mo. There’s no reason not to be a member. Even if you don’t fly often, you can keep banking those miles for a long time and eventually use them. Even better if you transfer CC points to the mileage program and add to it. I just redeemed 2 RTs x 2 people for the next few months.

Here is a basic value for miles on Delta
For every 10,000 Delta miles you accrue, it equals $100 in ticket value.
That certainly is not exact but its a good rule to go by. Of course Delta decides on each flight depending on how full and valuable the flight is but thats a general rule

Correct. Which is why I said you have to have a catalyst to keep them from expiring.

Signing up for their dining rewards program is a great way to keep miles from expiring.

I have one with American Airline, one with Delta, and one with United.... mainly because I have the Delta CC which gave me miles and the other two because I use when I fly short mileage situations.

I have miles on United that I cannot hardly use. They are just about worthless.
I'm switching to Southwest now that they fly to Belize. Hopefully they will fly to Grand Cayman some day.

How so? I haven’t really looked at earning rates of other airlines in a long time, but doubt it’s much difference. Redemption seems good to me and lots of options.

I have used United miles multiple times for business class seats to Europe. I'll take your "worthless" miles if you don't need them.

I don't have many on United, mainly miles from New Orleans to Houston to Portland and New Orleans to Chicago
but I'm sure I can book a 100-200 dollar trip each year to keep my miles active

I'm a Delta guy and they seem to have a good return on mileage for my flights. FWIW I've averaged about 80 flights per year with them and have totaled around 600k miles.

I quit airline miles years ago..... Credit card points are way more flexible and longer lasting. I've had boocou miles taken from me by airlines.. As they can change rules on a dime.... Lounges are great if you have long layover or delay.... But I have yet to use a lounge as they always seem to be in a different terminal than where I am flying out of....

My boss says it's "ok" you can only change your companion every so often.

The problem is that I have to connect through IAH from a small market. I could use them easily if I drive to IAH and fly non-stop from there. The connection from my city on a small plane makes it difficult to use them.
And I don't fly enough to earn any status, so I have enough points to get a ticket, but not enough to get an "anytime" seat.
SW suits my needs better. The miles don't expire and they can be used to buy a companion pass whenever I have enough.
