The family will be going to the Smoky Mountains this weekend - next week and are renting a cabin in Wears Valley. We have been to this area numerous time but never during the winter. What are some of the things to look to do in this area during the winter time? Our family is pretty active and looks to avoid touristy areas such as downtown Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

TIA

Anakeesta is really nice. I'm also a fan of the alpine coasters on Wares Valley.

I think there are skiing/snow boarding slopes in the general area.
My ex-boss used to go to that general area w/ his teenage son.

They got a lot of snow in western NC yesterday, not sure about TN.

Saw the food post, but be prepared for snow/ice/slush, we got a good dusting in the higher elevations and even some in the lower up that way this past weekend with more possible in the forecast.

Check out the new section of the Foothills Parkway from Wears Valley back to just before Townsend. got some really pretty views up there without as much traffic for now til more people find out about it. Just opened this year.

Winter isn't as active in the outdoors area, lots of access will close for the season in the park. They have the big christmas light show in the parking lot of Smokies stadium. Think the Christmas parade already happened.

If you get a really good cold snap it's awesome to do the waterfall hikes and see them frozen over.

Trails are definitely less busy this time of year.

It's been pretty shitty weather the last few weeks, a lot of cloudy gloomy days spitting rain every so often.

I think the Fontana Dam visitor center is closed this time of the year, but it a cool dam to visit if you have never been there.
