grand canyon north rim, it's at a higher elevation and is closed seasonally, so check before you just decide to go. it will be way less crowded than the south rim

I considered this, but it looks like it's a good 5-6 hour drive from Sedona, and I couldn't find any lodging near there. Does that seem right? There's not really a direct path from what I could determine because there's a huge canyon you have to drive around. Inconsiderate canyon.

it's around 5. there is lodging inside the park, grand canyon lodge. there's a visitor center there, hiking trails, and a restaurant, i believe. it wouldn't be bad for a one night deal.

i honestly thought it was closer than that, but the area kind of runs together when you aren't out there every day anymore.

Yeah, all the park hotels are booked already the week we'll be there. Oh well. We'll do the drive from the east gate down to the South Rim.

I'm not sure the North Rim is even open right now. The visitor's center usually closed in the winter up until May. It is much more primitive than the south rim. IMO, it is best experienced from a tent or hammock, but renting an RV (CruiseAmerica is in Mesa, AZ) is pretty great, too.

I do think there is a lodge on the north Rim, but that's pretty much it for civilized accomodations.

Just booked a long weekend in Sedona for the end of April. Arriving into PHX Wed night and leaving Sunday afternoon.
I don't know if you have kids, but there is a train you can ride up from Williams, AZ that drops you off right at the South rim and brings you right back. The train station is right in town where they have a real classic Americana, Route 66 vibe going on. We did that with kids and my mom for our first visit to HC and enjoyed it. They do this whole song and dance number on the train for the ride up to the GC. On the way back, they have a bunch of guys on horses that run down the train and "rob" the passengers on the train that was entertaining. It's a slow ride, but great family time and a unique experience.

We actually had to change our plans and are now going the first week of June. Lady we rented the house from said it'll be crowded then, but manageable. She said the worst time to come is July and August - hot and crowded.

Keep checking Notth Rim lodging. People overbook and cancel days as it gets closer
