We’ll be taking a short 6 day trip to England in late April. Reason for the trip is a VIP gameday experience in Manchester at Old Trafford. So the final 1.5 days will be spent in Manchester before flying home.

That gives us 4 full days on the ground beforehand. We’ve never been to England or Scotland. For those who have been, how would you recommend that we best spend our 4 days?

I’d really REALLY love to go to Scotland. I want to go to Edinburgh and walk the streets and hit some pubs and do scotch tasting tours. Travel around the countryside as much as possible. I know 4 days isn’t nearly enough to do it all. But is that enough time to be worthwhile?

Or would we be better off spending our time in London?

If you really want to go to Scotland, go to Scotland. It’s that simple.

Ha, yeah I think I made it obvious that Scotland would be my preference. My concern is only having 4 days and potentially feeling rushed and missing out on a lot.

I’m hoping someone here can talk me into it that 4 days would be worthwhile. And also make some targeted itinerary recommendations.

Wife is mostly indifferent but she’s slight lean preference to London. Scotch tasting tours don’t really move the needle for her.

Put it this way, if you love Scotland 4 days won’t be enough time. But neither would 4 years. So go and see if it lives up. Not like you can’t go back and do London next time.

We’ve never been to London, but we have rented a car and driven from Manchester to Edinburgh twice. About a four hour drive. Edinburgh is a special city. We just stayed in bed and breakfasts. They were a lot cheaper than hotels.

St. Andrews is an hour away from Edinburgh as well.

You want to be talked into it? Here you go.

I was in the UK for a week long business trip last summer. I ended up having four days after the business trip to burn.

I spent one day in London and did the Tower of London and a couple of pubs. The Tower is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. No joke. But if you go, get the ticket the day prior for the gate opening / earliest block. The tickets have a time window for when you can enter. The second the gates open, haul arse to the Crown Jewels and see them first. I walked straight in and by the time I saw them and came out there was a Disney World style one hour wait line to get in. Spent most of the rest of the day seeing the rest of the place. Ate fish and chips in a local pub that night and got in bed early.

Jumped on a train early the next day, get First Class, and rode up to Edinburgh. Spent two nights there. Thought about trying to do a day trip out into the countryside but there is a TON to do in town. Stick with the town first time around. See the Castle and the Palace. Do the Real Mary King's Close tour and eat lunch and have a couple of pints at The End of the World Pub. One wall of that pub was built by the Romans. Go to the Celtic Craft Centre on Paisley Close and buy a kilt. Expect to drop a thousand bucks for a real handmade kilt and accessories. Don't go to one of the department stores, the guys at Celtic are the real deal. No sewing machines. Do scotch flights in any of the numerous pubs. Let the wife go shopping up and down the Royal Mile. She will be ecstatic.

Flew home the next day.

You won't see all of London or Scotland in three days but I managed to pack a hell of a lot into the three days using the above itinerary. Highly recommend.

If I only had four days, I would go to Edinburgh. I have been several times and feel that 3 days is abut the right amount for the city so you could do a day trip from there. You will love it. Great medium sized city.

Driving over there is not fun for a Yank, and it cancels out the opportunity to sip scotch or a pint of bitter at a pub. Their drink driving laws don't play.

I'd probably look into a coach tour that runs out of Edinburgh for a day to see the countryside. Then you can enjoy the trip and scenery.

You can probably do Edinburgh plus a day trip in 4 days, but you will be left wanting more. Both Stirling and St. Andrews are both really interesting and would get you out of the city.

Edinburgh is awesome. The people are super friendly.
London sucks. The people there are muck like New Yorkers in a bad way.

$1,000? How often would you wear that thing to justify it?
