Ok board... y'all have been amazing for my Ireland trip in May so I want to source ideas for my next trip in August.

Background: Father in law and I want to go back it around and drink scotch. I am an Isley guy and he prefers Speyside scotches.

Trip: looking for 7-8 nights in August. Flying from MSY-JFK-GLA and return via Delta. Going to burn some global upgrades so first class flights run $860 a piece... plus I have a couple credits (unfortunately I can only use one at a time) so mine comes down to $550.

Transportation- will rent a car

Lodging- would like to use SPG or Marriott points where possible. It looks like there are a few in the country.

Desires for the Trip- play golf, drink scotch, and see memorable stuff. Food and dinners are less important but if the board has recommendations send them along.

So... how would you spend 7 days across the country? Any recommendations or must see's/do's/eat's??

Thanks for the help and of course... once I learn how to post pics... I will do it for my Ireland and Scotland trips.

I don't have any real overly particular recommendations but Edinburgh is a beautiful city and well worth spending a few days in. If you can, golfing at St. Andrews is beautiful.

Enjoy, sounds like a fantastic trip.

Cap, I'm a nautical history guy so my 10 day Scotland trip (coming in 2018) will include a flight up to the Orkneys for Scapa Flow and the Neolithic sites up there. I don't golf so I'll have a bit more open days than someone who is playing rounds.

The rough plan is-

Three days in Edinburgh, Falkirk Wheel, a day or two in Glasgow, down to Lockerbie, Ben Nevis and probably up to Skye, and then settle into some Speyside whiskey locations and then back down to Edinburgh.

Subject to amendment, but at least it's a plan.

Good luck on your trip!

I'm heading to Edinburgh on Friday for a few days. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as restaurants or anything to do besides what has already been mentioned?

The Tattoo is pretty cool. Don't plan your trip around it but if you are there at that time, do it. Think Battle of the Bands meets bagpipes meets old castle. It was a good show.

This. 2-3 days in Edinburgh. You will not be disappointed. You will likely be there for the Fringe Festival which has some great comedy shows for night life.

Don't pass up the small places. We had a great time in Glasgow and Edinburgh but also enjoyed Luss, Wigtown, Inverary and several other smaller spots. Renting a car worked well for us. Can't wait to go back.

Does anyone have any tips on Scotch tours? I know we will need to explore Speyside for sure to hit a few like Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, and Aberlour. Any recommendations on pulling off tours? I sure as hell don't want to drink a lot of scotch and drive.
