Never been to the area. Rec's? Safe to go into Mexico? Searched site an found a few helpful comments but would welcome any personal suggestions. Wife doesn't hike...

These are all good plus Balboa Park and the Point Loma area; you drive through there to get to Cabrillo NM. And if you like historical places there are a few missions we found interesting. Embarcadero Marina Park is a nice place to walk.

Torrey Pines State Park (& the Golf Club) are just North of La Jolla.
