Never been to the area. Rec's? Safe to go into Mexico? Searched site an found a few helpful comments but would welcome any personal suggestions. Wife doesn't hike...

No need to go into Mexico plus I thought the borders into Mexico and Canada were still closed due to COVID

Head over to Coronado
Cabrillo National Monument
San Diego Zoo
Gaslight District
Eat in Little Italy
Old Town Mexican
Take a trip to La Jolla

These are all good plus Balboa Park and the Point Loma area; you drive through there to get to Cabrillo NM. And if you like historical places there are a few missions we found interesting. Embarcadero Marina Park is a nice place to walk.

Torrey Pines State Park (& the Golf Club) are just North of La Jolla.
