The largest moose population in the state is at State Forest State Park. It borders RMNP to the NW side which is why you have a better chance of seeing them on the west side of RMNP. No clue how the Cameron Peak fire is affecting them.

Bear Lake and Dream Lake are both nice for that age. Trail Ridge Road is a good drive for them in the park. St Mary’s Glacier is also cool, not in the park but fairly close and doable for that age.

Bring lots of water, snacks, etc. St. Mary's Glacier is really in the middle of nowhere. Bring some big trash bags and you can probably slide down the glacier like a sled. It's lots of fun! The hike is about a mile, I think, but just take your time on the parts that might be harder for a 5 year old. The first part is pretty rocky, but he will be fine. Make sure and follow the trail towards the lake and go up to the Glacier from there. The trail goes past the lake on the right of it. The first time we went, we went the opposite way up and it was not good!

I've been to St. Mary's in both June and October. There was snow on the Glacier both times. In October, we were there a week after a snow. It may be that way now.

We went to RMN two years ago. The town itself is nice with lots of restaurants and shops.
The park itself was nice, but really crowded. If you didn’t get up early for certain hikes, they entirely closed off parking lots and roads for the day.
I’d suggest doing your hikes on the weekday.
The nymph lake hike is short and scenic
As far as wildlife, we saw elk in downtown. Wildlife is abundant.

A photo I took at Nymph Lake

We flew to Denver on Thursday and went to RMNP Saturday to find out it was reservation only. Was surprised, but my fault. Was turned around at the park entrance.

"Reservations due to social distancing and the strain that COVID has put on Park Rangers" BS if you ask me, we just wanted to drive through.

Estes Park had lots of elk just laying around.

This doesn’t make sense. Let people enjoy the stinking wide open spaces and the great outdoors!

Wow, that's amazing. We're leaving next Thursday. I have reservations on Saturday and Monday, but I think we're just going Monday because of the LSU game

RMNP gets really crowded. Especially Bear, Emerald, Dream Lakes. I definitely can see why they decided to restrict access to fewer people.

What my family has been doing is just getting to the park before 6am, as the rangers don’t man the stations until then and you can just drive on through. It’s a commitment waking up that early but I don’t really mind, the park is even more beautiful around that time and we don’t see anybody else out on the trails until a few hours later.

We have a ton of smoke in the area right now from the west coast, as well as the Cameron Peak fire which is ongoing. Hopefully it lessens in the next week or so.

Interested, yes. But I don't think we will be doing much off-roading in my brother-in-law's Hyundai Santa Fe

I just read that Old Fall River Rd is closed due to the fire. That's disappointing

We’ll be in Estes Park and the RMNP at the end of next week. Once you arrive, can you please report back with the smoke level in the area? I have lung issues and I’m not sure if we should cancel or not. Thanks!

We are leaving Estes @ at The Stanley today. Smoke was pretty bad last Wednesday and Thursday. Clear every day since then. RMNP was beautiful, went all over.
