Getting nervous. Going with three divers, but I’m not so into that. I bought a mask and snorkel but mostly to use right out in front of our place.

I’m going to be there a week...is there anything to do besides read and drink?

Anything good to drink besides rum, which I haven’t drank since Costa Rica a million years ago.

You’re asking this the day before you leave?

Already checked into my flight. Can’t believe it’s actually happening. Drunk talk leads to a guy’s trip...no idea what I’m going to do for a week besides read 3 Vonnegut books.

I’ve got 3 restaurants recs from here.

I have made a day trip there from Mexico, Xcalak. Sitting and drinking will be a lot of your time. There should be fishing guides, the area is one of the premier saltwater flyfishing spots in the world, it is possible to get a grand slam, with tarpon, bonefish permit and snook.

I’m not much a fisherman and my BIL is damn near a guide. Ate some offshore white trout and tuna at his place last night. I don’t mind it, I just didn’t really grow up doing it. Paddle boarding or renting a scooter, or waterskiing, or surfing, or hiking, tossing a disk...IDK?

Download a whole bunch of books to iPad, kindle, or phone. Vonnegut wrote way more than 4 books. Bring a drawing pencil and sketchbook, make some art. Write. Look around. Admire the view. Try your hand at just being, talking to whoever you encounter about whatever suits your mood. Ask people questions, listen to the answers. Read the books left behind by previous travelers.....

In short, relax. And maybe think about why ample free time in a tropical setting seems to frighten you.

All good thoughts, just mostly don’t want to leave my wife and son. I’ll miss his first day/week of football practice and his orientation day at Stanislaus. Today’s my wife and I’s 17th anniversary...my mom just got out of ICU, wife and son going to see her tomorrow...IDK, just feel a bit rotten for taking off.

Excited about the Vonnegut books, reread Slapstick in Old Seagrove a couple of weeks ago, so I’m ready to get into the new ones.

Oof, leaving wife on anniversary and mom just out of ICU is different. Hope your wife is an understanding soul. But you knew the date when you booked the trip, no? Not like it was a surprise. Hope you’ve got something special for her planned. At the very least, an interesting souvenir or two from your trip.

My wife’s amazing, I’m going to miss her like crazy. I’ve traveled for work before and lonely hotel rooms suck, but being somewhere beautiful without her will be worse.

My mom’s getting better and her surgery wasn’t life threatening, she just needed loads of care after. My wife’s a great cook, so she’s going to go feed everyone for the weekend and cook for them for the week. All will be well.

Good idea to pick her up something special, I’ll be on the lookout the entire time.

There’s a place that will serve an amazing raw beef burger. Right up your alley.

I haven't had Salva Vida (Lifesaver) beer since I was on the nearby island of Utila in 1997, but back then, it was decent and extremely cheap.

There’s a Dolphin Preserve that’s awesome . It’s a research center and does private tours. Exceptional experience if you into that kind of stuff.

I’ve never wanted to dive, just not something that’s ever piqued my interest. Not really a place I want to hang out at. I think free diving seems a little more palatable.

I think you're talking about Anthony's Key. If you get time go there, Also take the ferry to utila. Last time i was there visiting family, we did that and saw a whale shark.
If you do go to Utila, Carnival might be going on there right now and it's a good time.

I think he's talking about Anthony's Key as well. You can't walk to it from West Bay Beach.

Eat at Cal's Temporary Cantina!! It can't be said enough. Cal is a fantastic cook.
