heading out Monday for my first trip to Mexico ... staying in Punta Mita north of PV. Seems like renting a car is a good idea from a mobility and financial standpoint. Any tips? warnings? The "if you get in a wreck" legal implications sort of turned me off, but seems like straightforward driving outside of the city.

TIA

Mandatory liability insurance will be included in the rental. If you also pay for a collision damage waiver, then the implications of getting in a wreck are minimal.

I mean, don't drive drunk and kill someone. That would have implications.

I'll add that the corrupt Mexican police prey on American drivers. Be prepared to be pulled over multiple times and shown a placard that shows that you are speeding even though no signs exist showing the speed limit on the placard. I'm not sure about PV but it is prevalent in Cancun.

I love Mexico but will never rent a car there again.

Do not give them your passport. Try to keep your cool and negotiate down with a smile.

I never travel in a foreign country with my passport. It's locked away in the safe where I stay. We'll carry a copy of our passport in those circumstances. Once we arrive at a destination the passport is locked away.

Bring an old license or old passport in case it’s confiscated.

Had a moto rental issue in Isla Mujeres and the owner threatened to keep the license.
