Hi travel board,
We’ve got the idea that for Thanksgiving this year, we’d like to fly out somewhere snowy, possibly rent a cabin for a week, and just let our young boys (4 and 2) experience snow.

I was thinking somewhere in Colorado or even Montana, but I wouldn’t rule anywhere out.

Do any of y’all have any suggestions of
A. A destination where snow is probable
B. Any specific cabins/ cool rentals?

5 States with Snowiest November

I found this article... Colorado is probably your best bet if you don't want to go to Alaska.

Not sure if you are expecting a ton of snow on the ground, or if you just want it to happen while you are there. But it can really be a crapshoot in November. Especially if we have another winter like this year.

You should probably think about Canada.

We've been to the Banff/Lake Louise area around Thanksgiving and it had a TON of snow. Was surprised actually. Been twice. Once we rented at Baker Creek. Really nice and close by.

Same with Whistler.

Google current conditions and forecasts for this year. But we had a blast.

Stowe Vermont, fly into/out of Montreal. Short but beautiful drive.

We also have done Northern Idaho, fly into Spokane, stayed at a resort in Idaho. Went skiing in Montana.

The North Pole. You can get your Christmas order in while you are there.

If you go Colorado you are probably going to want to be flexible.

Are you going to want to ski?

I'd consider somewhere around Yellowstone-Jackson Hole or Big Sky, or Alta in Utah. Thanksgiving Day is the first week a lot of ski resorts open but some of that is due to demand, but its also a sign of when the first realistic snows may happen.

Now if you are just looking for a little snow and don't need to sled then I'd think most of Colorado would be good.

We did Colorado in 2021 to visit my sister in Denver and it snowed in the mountains multiple days but not in the Denver suburbs off the mountains.

No, we just wanted snow for both the kids to play in and for the scenery. I think it would be a cool vibe to have thanksgiving dinner in a cabin surrounded by snow.

Somewhere in the upper peninsula west of Marquette, Michigan will be a pretty safe bet for snow. Getting there isn’t the easiest but it is very isolated and will be quite peaceful. Go check out airbnb they have cabins for $150-200/night.

All activities will be outside, so depending on the weather you’ll have to play it by ear. If a storm hits you can hunker down with a fire and enjoy the snow like you said. Snowmobiling, skiing, and cross country skiing are fun but with little ones you might want to pass. If it’s milder, you can kayak, hike to see waterfalls, fish etc.
