I'm thinking about taking my wife and 16 year old son on a quick trip to New York City over the Labor Day weekend. Any suggestions on things to do, places to see, hotels, restaurants, etc. Mostly interested in sightseeing and going to a Yankees or Mets game.

Not sure if this is something you enjoy but the old TWA terminal at JFK is now a hotel with rooms and rooftop bar looking over the runway. It may be fun stay for a night if that is your sort of thing.

We took a sailboat tour from this company. Good way to spend an early afternoon.

Near the WTC complex and there is an Eataly nearby too.

We also saw the To Kill a Mockingbird play with Jeff Daniels. I think the original cast was only set to do a year, so that would be cool to check out. Aaron Sorkin wrote it for him to play Atticus.

You can reserve free tickets to walk up The Vessel in Hudson Yards. They become available two weeks out from the date you want to visit. You can also walk up and get a ticket to check it out.

The US Open is fun half-day, even if not big tennis fans. 9/11 Museum was worth a couple hours, IMO. I'm more into that than art museums, which are obviously top-rate in NYC.

Go support your LSU brethren at Gumbo Bros in Brooklyn for lunch one day.
ETA: they also have a storefront in or near Grand Central now.

Great suggestions in here so far. Was coming to say the US Open would be great for a day or night session. 9/11 museum is a must if you haven't been. Even the TSA hotel if youre flying in or out of JFK, have heard good things so far.

Staten island ferry will give you views of the statue of liberty for free, just take the ferry over and back

Yes. Great suggestions so far. Keep them coming.

I keep hearing that I should buy a City Pass? Is that worth it for two full days of sightseeing?

9/11 Museum is very good. Lines are usually long. I’d buy tickets in advance.

Statue of Liberty also has long lines as they have TSA type security. I went on the first boat over and was the second in line which was good, because two minutes later there was a huge line.

Food Tours of NY is a great way to see the city. One of my favorite things to do when I’m in NY.

Empire State Building is okay, but expensive with long lines. Top of the Rock is similar with similar views.

Central Park is an amazing park you could literally walk around for hours.

Go see a show on Broadway. Go to Times Square after the sun goes down.

I like the Highline and Chelsea Market area.

A City Pass can be helpful if you want to go to a bunch of museums. I’d suggest the Met. I wasn’t overly impressed by the Natural History museum. And the zoo isn’t that great.

Baseball game is fun and you can take the subway to the stadium. The US Open tickets were pricy when I was there.

Go see Hamilton.

We've seen it twice. It's expensive but worth every penny.
