Can I have a few drinks while touring the island on a golf cart? Not talking about getting tanked, just a stop here or there on the South end of the Island. I would really like to avoid Mexican Prison if possible

Sure you can, just don't get on the golf cart and act an arse or make it obvious.
We stopped at most of the places on the south side, drank while there and cruised on to the next spot. Never had a problem.
We saved acting stupid for once we made it back to the condo.

we rented a cart one day, stopped and had drinks at our stops but didnt get sloppy drunk or anything and never had an open container and it was all good.

another day, we hired Tours with Robby to drive us around the island to see places that we hadnt seen yet, that day we had beers on the cart and were drinking them freely.

The driver told us that the police wont pull over carts that are driven by local tour companies even if there're open containers but will pull over a cart driven by tourists for open containers even if the driver doesnt have a drink in his hand.

Do NOT be the driver with a drink or beer in your hand. They are cracking down on that big time. Being a passenger with a drink is fine.

Drinking and operating is illegal there just as it is here.

This 10,000%. I literally had my 13-year-old drive 100 m in our golf cart and we got pulled over and got a citation, so yes they are cracking down on tourists driving golf carts, in fact, we are breaking the law so they are just doing their jobs. Don’t chalk this up to “corrupt Mexicans”. I earned every dollar of that fine.
