Leaving Tuesday for 5 days with the family. we are doing 2 days in the Denver area and 3 in the mountains in Breck.

My question is this. We were planning on doing a day in Colorado Springs, but with the Pikes Peak train being down, i was wondering if its worth spending a day in Colorado Springs? I have a 9 and 6 year old daughter, so my options are this

1. Still go to Colorado Springs, and drive around Pikes Peak, do Garden of the Gods, and Air Force Academy.

2. Spend a second day in Denver area. We already are doing the Aquarium and Natural History Museum, but this gives us an extra day to do the Mint, Capital, Zoo, Childrens Museum, etc.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I would spend the day in Colorado Springs, as there a ton of great outdoorsy things to do. Further, if you plan on going to a zoo, I always recommend visiting Cheyenne Mountain zoo in Colorado Springs. The Denver zoo is a lot less exciting in my opinion.

I live in Denver. It’s a city, no different from most others. What sets it apart is the mountains. Go there. Skip Denver and the Springs.

I have 7 and 9 year old boys. We just spent the weekend in RMNP camping and hiking. The mountains are why we all live here.

I’m assuming you have a car. You should drive up through Boulder then Lyons to Estes Park. Drive through RMNP on trail ridge road(highest continuis paved road in America) over the Grand Lake and spend the night there. Or keep going to Granby or Winter Park. From there it’s a beautiful ride over to Breck. You’re mind will be blown!

Or you could drive over to Steamboat from Granby and spend the night there. If you do that go to Breck via 131 and stop at Lupitas for tacos. You’ll also get to see Vail if you go this route.

^^^^ and raft the Arkansas. Your kids will remember that more than touring either city.

8thyearsenior is on point, his post is spot on. Your time is much better spent in rmnp park than Denver.

Rafting trip that goes under the Royal Gorge bridge is incredible.

Getting tickets to the US Mint is like entering Fort Knox - we just went to the gift shop because we forgot to plan that part.

I agree with post about going through Boulder up to Estes Park, stay a night, and through RMNP.

Also, I would take the road up to Mt Evans, a little less crowded than RMNP and is one of the highest peaks like Pikes Peak and is closer to that Denver area you will be in. Stunning views up Mt Evans.

I'm planning my 2nd trip to Colorado and am looking at doing Winter Park, Grand lake, then Estes Park. I'm familiar with Estes but do you have any recommendations on Winter Park and Grand lake?

Skip the springs. Head to Estes Park and Boulder.

I’m only in WP to ski or mtn bike so I don’t really know what else to do there. Mt Flora is close by and a great hike anyone can do.

Grand Lake has hiking with the East Inlet trail. Adams Falls is about a mile round trip and if you want more just follow the trail along the stream. It starts in town but you hike into RMNP. North Inlet trail has the fire lookout tower if you’re in good shape. The marina on lake ave rents SUPs and boats.

RMNP is just north of town. The park is one of my favorite places ever. Drive over trail ridge road. I can recommend a few hikes on the west side but most are kinda long. We saw a ton of elk and moose this weekend on the west side. The Colorado river starts in the Never Summer range there so it’s a small stream through the park. Fly fishing through there is rad. You might not catch shite but it’s still rad. Blue Water bakery has good breakfast. I’m always camping over there so I don’t get to the shops/restaurants much.

As already mentioned, the zoo in Colorado Springs is awesome and my kids absolutely loved it.
