Punta Cana - Anyone know how bad the Zika Virus is down there?

Have a trip with the wife and some friends scheduled for July at CHIC Punta Cana. Just found out last week that we are pregnant. Anyone know how bad the Zika Virus is down there?
If you read the CDC's website, they make it seem like the whole island is in Outbreak mode. Would like the boards thoughts on this. We have travel insurance and can cancel if need be. Appreciate any insight

Per the CDC website
Ask yourself..."are we really gonna enjoy this trip, or be obsessed about preventing mosquito bites the entire time?"
If I was the one pregnant...I would just not go. Not worth it imo.
ETA: I realize Zika has already been found in the United States(parts of Texas and Florida). I don't think things are in "outbreak mode" and the Zika hysteria has died down in the media. That said....the one group of people that should avoid Zika areas are pregnant women. Doctors still have no idea exactly why Zika causes microcephaly or why some pregnant women with Zika don't have babies with the birth defect and others do.
Because so much is still unknown, I don't think it's going overboard for a pregnant woman to err on the side of caution. It's just a vacation that can be rescheduled another time. And really....how much will your wife enjoy the trip if she has Zika on the brain the entire time?
quote:
A pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. CDC recommends special precautions for the following groups:
Women who are pregnant:
Should not travel to any area of Dominican Republic below 6,500 feet (see map).
If you must travel to one of these areas, talk to your doctor first and strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during your trip. If your itinerary is limited entirely to areas above 6,500 feet, there is minimal risk of getting Zika from a mosquito.

We stayed at that very resort last October. (It was kind of a disappointment, btw...) Anyway, they had warnings re: Zika everywhere and sprays for guests to use, etc. The only time mosquitoes got us was when we went on a day trip away from the resort (which was the highlight of the trip in spite of the mosquitoes), but there were several people we met from Europe that had huge welts on them. We tried for a couple of days to figure out what type of disease these people must have to cause the enormous welts. Turns out it was mosquito bites they had gotten there. I'm not sure if it's because they haven't had as much exposure to mosquitoes as we've had in Louisiana or what. But they were enormous welts.
Enjoy your trip. Ha. Just kidding (not about what I wrote above- that's all true).
In closing, knowing a bit about Zika and mosquitoes and having stayed at this resort seven months ago, i'd probably not go. Sorry. I know it's disappointing and inconvenient to have to rearrange or delay travel plans.

As a woman, I totally agree with Nurse. No way would I go if I were either pregnant or contemplating pregnancy.

We're going to the Bahamas in a few weeks. We have Zika Tests lined up for a few weeks after we return.
I know that if my wife was pregnant, she would cancel the trip.

Going on our honeymoon to Punta Cana in 3 weeks. I am now wondering if we should do something similar as well. Not looking to get pregnant that soon.

If you're not trying to get pregnant soon, then just jimmy up. Unfortunately, you really need to jimmy up for about six months.

Agree with the women in this thread. My sister asked husband and I to go on a Caribbean vacation with her and her husband this month. We've been trying, so I said no because of the possibility I'd be pregnant. Not worth the risk, IMO. We can go later when we're done having kids.
