I know there are a few who live there. I’ve visited a couple times. I just got a job offer in Portland. My SO lives there.

What are some pros/cons for those who live there or have lived in the area?

Looks like very high income tax. But no sales tax. So they may cancel each other out?

Mild winders but lots of rain. Also very mild summers. Seems like a slow paced lifestyle which would be a good change. Cost of living looks to be slightly more than Denver?

I currently live in Denver.

Your SO lives there but you have no idea what its like? I've never lived there, I think it would be a great place to live. Definitely out there though, the people especially in town.

She’s in med school. Her life consists of going to school then studying. Doesn’t get out much to see what it’s like.

You are in Denver? I'm sure you will like it then if you are used to Denver. If your SO is in Med school its likely a short term time period for you to live and work there right? I'd absolutely go then if that's the case, yolo.

I don't live there but my daughter does and we've visited her before. And you do things for love so we're going to take that separately!

Pros:

Nice food scene. A lot of great ethnic type restaurants like Japanese and Vietnamese for example.

Temperate weather most of the year until it starts to rain.

Proximity to some gorgeous scenery on the coast and in the mountains.

Some great wineries are less than an hour away.

Great craft brew scene there.

Professional sports.

Cons:

It's very liberal so be aware of that if politics are of concern to you. There are routinely protests in the streets on either side.

They have a big homeless problem like most major cities. Don't like how the homeless are allowed to just camp in parks and near the interstate. Not everywhere of course but you certainly notice it. I am sympathetic to their plight and just wish bigger cities could do something more in a different way. But to me it's noticeable in Portland just like it is in LA.

My daughter complains about the "crazy drivers" all the time.

Hope that helps some. Others will have additional input.

Interesting. I was just visiting Portland last week and find the drivers to be very good. Of course I live in Dallas where it's chaos on the roads. In Portland, all drivers stop at crosswalks if you are a pedestrian which is shocking. Similarly, people are very polite in general. Overall, Portland is one of my favorite cities. If I we're going to live there, I would try to live on the east side of the river as it's a little more chill than Nob Hill, Pearl District, etc.

Live in Vancouver, WA if your commute isn't terrible. No income tax.

It may have have changed, I suppose. In 2015 I interviewed with a tech company in Portland and the CEO told me that's what she did, and she lived in Vancouver because there's no income tax.

Before exec leadership roles I had field leadership roles where I was paid out of a different state (NY, IL, TX), but paid income taxes in Utah. That's kind of a standard deal from my experience... that you pay income tax to the state where you reside, not where the company is located.

(edit) You can probably just look it up or ask a CPA there rather than word-of-mouth. Good luck. Portland is awesome and I'm the most conservative person I know.

I believe you pay 3% but don’t quote me. You pay some. frick that commute if you work in pdx but live in the vancouver.

Soon there’s an I5 expansion near downtown then who knows if there’s a new interstate bridge being built in the future but it all spells trouble and that commute is horrendous already. They are 20 years behind on expanding the infrastructure.

ETA....working in Vancouver and living in WA is the ideal way to go. No income tax and buy large purchases in Oregon. Not counting cars etc.

The job is in NW Portland industrial area so a Vancouver living situation could work.

I'm in Beaverton. So is your job near the St. Johns area? Regardless, you gotta cross that I-5 Bridge, and that's will slow you down during rush hour. I would check out the traffic before I do it. St Johns is actually gentrifying and has a nice little area with lots of development.

Portland has a lot to do within a couple of hours. You can be in Hood River or at the beach within 90 minutes. If you're there for just a couple of years, you'll have a lot of fun roaming the area - especially if you like the outdoors. Even if you don't like hiking/camping, the scenery is gorgeous. The weather is not as bad as it's made out to be. Winters get a lot of drizzle that I call "hoodie weather". But winters also have periods of sunshine and clouds. Summers are incredible - no humidity, no bugs, and bluebird skies.

Portland has a lot of "neighborhoods" that each have a different vibe. Find one that suits you and you'll be fine. It is probably a little cheaper than Denver, but if you're going to live near downtown, it won't be cheap. Both Portland and Denver have that hipster feel to it, but Portland seems a little bit more authentic. Denver's RINO district seems like they took what Portland has and paid someone big bucks to design and build it.

Think long and hard before deciding on crossing that bridge if you work a typical day shift mom through Fri.

Long and hard. I would turn on Google maps and use the traffic function to monitor it for awhile and see if you want that.

Bridge traffic isn't too bad during non rush hour times. Rush hour is going to be a real bitch, though. Worst traffic in the city. Having said that, traffic in Portland is pretty good for a decent sized city. Much better than most.

And Dallas has periods of sweltering and ball siphoning heat. Otherwise, it peache sours and hazy memories.
