We are going to be there for a couple of days in July.
Best areas of city to stay in (if we Airbnb)?
Any cool hotels?

Would probably help if you specified which Portland you’re talking about

We always stay in airbnbs on the east side. Google Ken's Artisan Pizza, which is fantastic, and that's the general area we stay.

We’ve stayed on the east side twice between Hawthorne and Division and liked that area. The last time we went we stayed in Vancouver across the river and really liked that area. It was very clean and it wasn’t a homeless tent city like Portland.

I'm in Portland a few times each year for work and always opt for Hampton Inn in Pearl District. A lot of bars, breweries and restaurants within walking distance and then hotel is modern, clean and very spacious.
ETA: Totally moot if you go Airbnb route but I've started opting for hotels wherever I go. Way easier to come-and-go without worrying about a book of rules and cleaning instructions.

Stay in a tent under a bridge, you might have as many options to do that as finding a hotel
