We will be in Philadelphia over the 4th of July holiday. Obviously we want to see this historical sites (Liberty Bell, Revolutionary museum etc), but what other sites/attractions are must-do? Hidden gems? We will be there for 3-4 days.
Also, I assume there will be a big fireworks show for the 4th. Where's the best area to see that?
Thanks!

Used to live an hour outside the city but haven't been in years. If you want the best cheese steak (IMO) check out Steve's Prince of Steaks.

If you're in to art, the Barnes Museum is a must see. It is one of the greatest collections of modern and post-impressionist art I have ever seen. And as an added bonus, the movie The Art of the Steal (2009), which is about the founder Dr. Albert Barnes and how his museum was stolen away by Philadelphia politicians and philanthropists, is extremely interesting and good.

I would also recommend the Barnes if you like Post-Impressionist art, probably the best collection I have seen other than the Musee d'Orsay.

Thanks for the heads up in Barnes to both y’all. We’re going soon. Anyone ever been to Angelo’s in south Philly? Came across it In a magazine and it looks like some of the best food on the planet. Looking to avoid tourist traps.

I did a great adult only walking tour my first night in Philly and it was great! There’s several I’m sure, it’s a fun way to check out some of the historical stuff without a ton of ppl there. Liberty bell line can take long, but it’s cool- read the stuff inside the museum when you get there.
Reading market was really close to my hotel and I enjoyed checking it out, good food places inside.

The Wawa Welcome America festival is what you are looking for on the 4th. It's on the Ben Franklin Pkwy right in front of the art museum. There are concerts all day then the big fireworks that shoot off right behind the museum on the river, so you watch them over the art museum. It's pretty impressive. The fest actually starts on June Teenth (19th) and concludes with those big fireworks/concert etc.

If you are interested in old time medical museums, the Mutter Museum is top notch. Be warned, some of the specimens and stuff in there is a little weird/disturbing as you can expect. It's by the Rittenhouse area so in a central good spot.
Have a beer at Monk's Cafe for some old school belgium food/drink. The rooftop bar at Continental is a mid century throw back and a good stop at night. Order a roast pork with sharp provo and broccoli rabe at Dinic's in reading terminal market. For a casual lunch/supper spot, Devil's Alley has a killer buffalo chicken sandwich.
And if you want some really top notch Italian in south philly, Ristorante Pesto is the spot. Trust me on that one.
