+1 on merino. Those merino t-shirt/undershirts have kept me from freezing on several trips. And a merino quarter-zip plus a button down and tie can dress up things for a guy without resorting to packing a jacket.

Merino wool and the Patagonia capilene base layers are the best.

I may be able to pull off a backpack and one bag, idk if that will be my small carry on, or my 57" check bag, but I will try to eliminate one of them.

I like These Cole Haan Chukkas if you want something more functional an stylish

Merrell Makes Some Great Waterproof Shoes (Have several variations)

You can usually find these a little cheaper on Amazon or Ebay. (If you use Chrome, make sure you get the "Honey Ad In". Can save you a bundle.)

standard protocol...

lay out everything you *think* you need.

now get rid of half of it.

buy the way.. people do live in europe and practically all the junk you want to carry around you can buy there.

for 16 days you should be able to fit everything you need in a child sized backpack.

Man, that's quite a list. I don't even own that much stuff. I have a 21-12-9 carry on bag. I bring along a few clothes and wash them in the bathtub at the hotel.

Some of you take the traveling light a little too far. I’m all for washing and re-wearing, but come on...16 days on a kiddie back pack? Do you just walk around smelling like a homeless person or spend time washing the same clothes every day? If you’re referring to buying clothes there, why would I want to buy clothes and then not even have a bag to bring them home?

why the fabric softener sheets if u sink wash? i get the febreeze spray as i pack that too to freshen up the clothes. i alao pack one wash rag/face towel per day and just throw them away when used. most hotels in europe do not provide face towels.

for a 2 week trip...

you'd need a couple pants...a few shirts...and a 2-3 decent undergarments. (wash undies every night...ready by morning)
a laptop, phone...headphones....and chargers for all.
maybe some slippers..

you wear a jacket(only for warm weather lands) and bulkier shoes/clothing on plane.
what else do you need?

want to be a rock star to your woman..?
you pack all that in an adult sized internally frame backbacks...since it will be 2/3rds empty...tell the woman you saved space so she can go shopping in europe.

i referred to buying toothpaste, and snack bars, etc on location...esp to a continent like EUROPE cristo sake.
even if going to nepal conquer mt everest...you'd get all your supplies there.

re:
clothes.. do you really need to bring your freaking closet for a 2 week trip?

if one has a BO problem...just make sure your airbnb rental has a washer/dryer. (or buy deodorant.....there)

That's just a reminder on my list to put fabric softner sheets in the mesh compartments in my luggage. It keeps my clothes smelling nice!

This can't be emphasized enough.

Not only do you not have to deal with checking/retrieving your luggage, it makes getting around Europe MUCH easier.

As has been mentioned in this thread, you won't need half of the items on your list.

Enjoy!

I'm going to give it a shot. I have eliminated about half the things I had listed, but I still don't think I can fit it in my carry on only. Either way, I'm only bringing 1 bag and a daypack. I may end up just checking my medium size bag and not have a carry on.

What's the purpose of this?

I'm very anti-checked bag, especially traveling international...so it will take a lot of convincing to change my mind.

To only have one bag to lug around while in Europe. I travel with a group, so I will have to wait for baggage regardless if I have checked luggage or not. Also, I am flying United this year (not happy about it), and supposedly they can be strict on their 22x14x9 requirement for carry on. I have a bag that is 20x13x7.5 and one that is 22x14x11. I don't really want to buy another carry-on to fit this..

Also if I check it, I can bring my razor and liquids..

A favorite thing about NOT checking a bag: strolling off the plane and directly to passport control, while the bulk of passengers from my flight are milling around at baggage claim. At smaller airports, this gets you through passport control before the rush of everyone else from your flight. Not such a big deal at larger airports, but a nice thing at smaller ones, where two or three simultaneous arrivals can mean sloowww processing through passport control.

RE: suitecases, the 20x13x7.5 you already own and a backpack or cabin bag that fits under the seat, and you're golden. Bonus points if the cabin bag or backpack has a sleeve to allow it to hook over the trolley handle of the larger bag. If your stuff *really* won't fit, look hard at your clothing: can you buy less bulky stuff that is easier to pack? Tech and microfiber fabrics squash down far easier than denim. A pair of hiking or golf microfiber pants may be as versatile as jeans but will pack way better.

Wear your bulkiest shoes while flying to save a bit more space.

ETA: you can take your disposable blade razor in your carry on bag, no problem.

That makes sense, definitely. If I were travelling alone or with 2-3 people, I could see where that would be a big deal, but with 40 people, I will have to wait anyway. Also, I am an adviser on this trip, so I can't leave people behind or rush ahead.

@hungryone, Thank you for all of your input and help. If anything, it makes me scrutinize and justify every single thing I pack! On the razor, I use a safety razor with a straight blade. I'll either find some blades there or I guess I might grow a beard :)

Its been said but can't be stressed enough, your worst dang case scenario is you buy a pair of pants or a shirt in Europe.

As said, wear your biggest heaviest shoes on the plane. I bring an extra set of shoes and a pair of flip flops.

Make sure ALL of your clothes can go together. That's the biggest key to cut down. I used to bring that shirt that only went with a certain pair of pants, then you'd wear the pants one day and they'd be dirty so then you can't wear that shirt until your pants are clean. Makes no sense.

If you are going to Italy during the summer and sweating that's one thing. But wearing a pair of pants 2-3 times between washings is more than fine for most of Europe most of the year.

One sweater or whatever that is neutral and matches everything. NO reason to take multiple of anything that is an outer layer.
