Staying at Andaz Costa Rica Resort in Papagayo in mid-July.
Has anyone stayed there or around there? What are some things to do, places to eat at, etc.
I will be golfing at the Arnold Palmer course at the Four Seasons...I know that much.
Thank in advance for you help!

Hookers are everywhere you look, bring some rubbers.

SWEET! Solid advice.

We stayed at that Andaz in September 2019. It's really nice. All of the restaurants on site were very good. I would recommend taking the mixology class offered by the resort and spending time at the Andaz Beach Club. The resort pics you up in a boat and brings you there. If you're going to have a car, I would go eat at La Casita Del Mariscos in Playa Hermosa and The Lookout in Playa del Coco. Also a day trip to Rincon de la Vieja National Park is nice too.

Thank you, sir! Will check those out.

Looks like you’re going to have to go to Playa Hermosa if y’all want to get out and eat offsite.

Headed to El Mangroove this week. Looks like it's about 30 mins south of you. I'll report back next week.

That was another option we looked at. Yes, please report back.
Have a great trip!

The Andaz (and the Four Seasons) are on their own peninsula. It’s a short drive from the airport in Liberia. As you get close, the landscape switches from typical Costs Rica (except drier because Guanacaste is arid) to USA style landscaping.
The Andaz is super nice. The downside is that it could be anywhere. You don’t get any feeling that you are in a foreign country.
The hotel, spa and beach are great. If you want to do anything else, you need to book tours off property. They’re easy to arrange and well worth it.
We did a horseback riding tour. The landscape looked like something out of a Sergio Leone western. The horses were not altogether well kept. We named Mrs. Bok’s horse “old piss” and mine “shoot me now.” Sad horses aside, it was well worth it. Saw a giant tree full of bats.

That's actually a positive for me. While on property - I like feeling as if I could be in America. As long as I get the foreign experience when I leave the property, then I'm fine.

We were looking at this as well.

If you don't go to Jaco, you went to the wrong place in Costa Rica.

I went to Costa Rica for 34 days after LSU undergrad and we traveled the entire country...didn’t step foot in Jaco.

I have been to Costa Rica twice but the last time was over 30 years ago, so I don't have any hotel or restaurant recommendations that would be of any value. I can tell you what was a blast and was the reason we went back the second time - white water rafting on the Rio Reventazon.

Just a caution that Costa Rica now has a higher per capita covid rate than India or Brazil. And they are restricting non-essential businesses and road travel in the central valley.
I'm going anyway in a couple of days and will post an update on conditions in a couple of weeks. It's for a fairly serious birding trip so we'll mostly be in remote locations and basic lodges. Our guide is also a friend who lives there. What he told us is that most restrictions are in the San Jose area and don't apply to most resort areas. Travel by car is supposed to be allowed if you can show a hotel reservation. They are on a odd/even license plate system on weekends with a few other possible restrictions as well. But there are also not supposed to be restrictions for rental cars. He says the situation is manageable. We'll see.

I am headed to that Andaz on the 18th. Also playing that golf course on the 19th. Outside of that all we have booked is the spa. It's an anniversary trip so looking for a little bit of R&R. We may go do an activity on 1 of the other 2 free days we have.
I'll report back after the trip. I am just hoping we still go with this most recent uptick.

Nice. I plan on doing the same - the one at the Four Seasons, correct? Did you make the tee time through Andaz?

Yep.

No I booked it here:

Select golf course/tee times in the drop down and submit your information. Someone reached out to me via email and I booked that way. Ended up doing a club and shoe rental as well, though I'm probably going to ditch the shoe rental.
I am going to call Andaz today to book airport transfer and will ask about transfer to golf course.
