My mom and one of her sisters are planning a trip this year to NY to see some of the US Open. Are there any reputable travel companies that specialize in travel packages for this event? They'll need flights, hotel, match tickets and hopefully a sightseeing itinerary. I've never traveled to an event like this so I'm not sure which direction to point her in as far as planning goes.

I went this past year for our first tennis match. There are companies that do that but it’s too easy to do yourself to be subject to the amount they charge. Ask me any questions you have

You can stay anywhere in the city because of the subway system. Flushing meadows is outside the city but it’s a quick subway trip there from the city so I suggest staying at a decent place in the city. Do not purchase tickets until they go on sale to the public. A ticket to Arthur Ashe gets you into any court so I would always suggest getting an ash ticket for whatever session they want to go. Use this website as a reference LINK . It helped me tremendously.

Is AmEx still a sponsor? If yes, and if you have an AmEx, use it. We went several years ago and bought tix for a night match at Arthur Ashe. Literally purchased the tickets within two minutes of them going on sale and had the absolute end of the topmost row in the stadium. AmEx cardholders had been able to buy during an earlier window, which we missed.

The poster who said you can stay anywhere in the city is correct. The subway was really easy to use to get out there, although make sure you plan ahead because it definitely gets crowded if you are headed out there at a peak time.

Pro tip for the subway.

When you arrive at Flushing Meadows, if you haven't already done so, go ahead and buy your ticket for the return before going into the event.

Because the line of fricking idiots will be long and horrible on the exit and you can skip it and get right on the train.

All of the above is accurate. My parents worked for the USTA and I went a bunch of times. You don’t need to pay for a “package” unless they are such inexperienced travelers that they can’t get from point A to B without someone holding their hand.

Tell them that the best tennis happens on the out lying courts. People fight to get in the stadium to sit 50 rows up. Meanwhile, you can walk over to an outer court and literally stand up against the fence fifteen feet away from the players.

I went for the first time this past year and Civil is right, you don't need to use a company because its pretty easy to do yourself. Where to stay depends on whether you will do more sightseeing or tennis. I was there mainly for tennis so I stayed at an AirBNB in Queens. Was a 5 minute walk to the subway and train station, train was a 10 minute ride to Flushing Meadows, 20 minute ride to Manhattan.

Also this guy has a ton of great tips that I used when planning our trip.

For you folks that have been, what would be a ballpark cost estimate, not including travel cost to get there?
Say for 4 or 5 days, for 2 people.

Or maybe another way to think about the cost; how much would you budget for it, excluding travel cost.

And would you recommend going the 1st week or the 2nd? Being there on the weekend on during the week?

I’ve only been once but here are my thoughts. If you go during the week, tickets will be cheaper. I would also suggest going around the 2-4 rounds because there is so many matches you can see. I went for the quarters and semis and most of the other courts had no one playing
