Hey guys, I have decided that’s our next stop for our annual couples trip

I just need guidance on where to stay

I see a lot of people like Hotel Secreto, which looks great except one thing;

The water on that part of their beach looks rocky and not possible to walk on. Is that correct? I know the two wives are going to want a nice beach that isn’t overly crowded they can sit and walk in the ocean.

Which place offers this if Secreto doesn’t?

It’s not a beach you can go into the water. In fact, it’s marked forbidden. The good news is that Playa Norte is a two minute walk around the point and the water is like glass.

Facing the Caribbean vs on the Bay of Women. Big difference.

ETA: it’s basically a private beach.

Is there a reasonably priced place to stay with it’s own beach on playa Norte?

Nope. Big public beach. Unless you want to sit amongst 1000 beach chairs stacked on each other at Ixchel.

ETA: to the right of Secreto’s beach is an area where they can do what they want. It’s more protected and people look for seashells there.

Gotcha. So if we stay at Secreto, we have a very easy walk to a beach with walk in water we can sit on all day with some chairs that won’t be too packed?

Na Balam, Villa Kiin, and Mia Reef (this one is more expensive, larger, all insclusice) are all seconds from Secreto and exactly what you are looking for. Literally around the corner and with white sand beaches, calm “pool” water, and great location with easy walking distance to everything on Playa Norte.

While Secreto is a great option there are plenty other ones right there that are equally as good and on better beach front.

Is there a discernible difference between Na Balam and Secreto?

Check out Zoetry Villa Rolandi. It's not on north beach but has a small private beach. We loved it but it's not what everyone else on here likes about isla. Just another option.

At Secreto your chairs are likely to be the only chairs on the beach.

Have not been since it has gotten ALL OF THE HIGH $ development.

I used to stay in Maria del Mar. Most snobs will probably not like it. I loved it. Casual, just the basics on the best beach. Used to have a hammock in each balcony.

Based on my experience, the best time to go to Playa Norte is in the morning. I normally went to the beach around 9:30, set my chair up underneath a palm tree and enjoyed the sun, sand and water for a couple of hours. When you it started to get crowded, I went back to my hotel to go out and explore the rest of the island. I would go back to the beach later in the afternoon/evening when the crowd started thinning out. I would also suggest being on the west side of the island to watch some spectacular sunsets.

Nothing like a sunset from Bally-Hoo with a cold one or a margarita in your hand.

Na Balam has new owners and is offering great deals. We just booked for a June trip.

Check it out.

The crowded Playa Norte is at the opposite end from where Secreto and Na Balam are. Look at my pics in the sticky thread on the travel board home page...you’ll see.

Na Balam is super chill and laid back. Offers a Polynesian atmosphere as opposed to modern chic...both hotels are awesome depending on your taste.

Na Balam has a Smoothie bar, fresh grill, and seafood raw bar are the best parts about it. Not to mention the smokin hot Brazilian waitresses. We’ve stayed there several times and have no reason to stay anywhere else.

Ha. I’ve got a work thing from the 24-28 so we’ll likely be going earlier in June
