Planning on a trip early August next year to hike. Any advice?

Is it a good hiking destination?

There’s a reservation system for the popular areas of the park, so be sure to book in advance.

August is a great time to visit. Great hiking destination too.

Some of my favorite hikes -

Paradise/Longmire area:

Comet Falls - highest waterfall in the park.

Paradise - walk up the mountain from lodge to the snow line

Sunrise area:

Any of the trails from the lodge - check out a map a make a loop the size of your ambitiousness. The lookout tower and Burroughs Range are a must IMO.

Mowich Lake area:

Tolmie Peak - great view from fire lookout over lake of mountain. Be sure to hike the extra hundred or so feet to check out Ipsut Pass on the way up.

Spray Park - hopefully some of the wildflowers are still out when you visit, but cool alpine meadow with mountain views. Hike through the forest and past a cool waterfall to get there.

Chinook Pass area:

Naches Peak loop trail - hike down the Pacific Crest National trail to Dewey Lake to extend hike

Oh wow so we are not even guaranteed to be able to hike trails? Is it a lottery system?

No, just a timed entry system for a few of the main roads. Longmire - Ohanepecosh, which is the road to Paradise, and the road to the Sunrise area.

Get a reservation in advance since you are planning so far out:

Absolutely. Went at the end of this past June and did the full Skyline Loop Trail. Lots of snow still at that time, but it was awesome. Lots of other good hikes around as well.

We rented a cabin in Ashford and had a great time. There's not much in Ashford, but the Basecamp Bar & Grill is a cool spot.

its a wonderful hiking destination. I did the Wonderland Trail in 2017. May have well been in Switzerland.

Id keep an eye on forest fires, though. Not that a distant fire would put you in danger but the smoke can cloud your views of Rainier

Rainer area is great, but the proximity to Seattle means that it is heavily visited. A bit farther north is Northern Cascades NP. It's better there, but reservations based on a lottery system are needed...LINK

Too many people... too few parks.

August can be HOT, so pick a location with higher elevation or plan for early morning/late evening hikes. Bring PLENTY of water

North Cascades lottery is for backcountry camping sites. Rainier has timed entry reservations; these are not the same.

It won’t be hot at the higher elevations. Mowich is a popular spot to escape the heat. Plus in August, it will probably be in the 70s there, cooler as you go up in elevation. But you are correct about bringing plenty of water, especially if you are not acclimated to the elevation.

Top two hikes I would do:

1. Tolmie Peak
2. Panorama Point via the Alta Vista trail from below the lodge

Also check out Reflection Lake and Grove of the Patriarchs.
