What do you like to do?

I have always stayed at the Moscow Marriott Grand Hotel. Expensive but the staff is great there and will help with any translations, writings, etc..

I am not into ballet, but once when my wife came, we went to the Bolshoi, and the building itself was incredible and an event that I am glad I got to see.

The bunker tour from the Cold War was great, and like things in the US, it is in a random neighborhood, and then goes down many stories.

Those are some things that people might not do, that immediately come to mind.

The rest, Red Square, Subway, Sisters, etc are all great too and something you must do.

Did you visit the Great Patriotic War museum? I’m thinking about going to Moscow in the future and I’m mostly interested in WW2 and Soviet era history.

How did you get your visa? I was going to go to Moscow and St Petersburg a couple of years ago, but the visa process is absurd.

I’m staying with a friend, but I went with the tourist Visa. It was easier then having them vouch for me.

I still had to get a letter of invitation from a tour company though, but all that required was twelve dollars, an internet connection, and an hours wait.

Didn't you still have to send your passport to the embassy?

That’s a fair question, I’d love to see a war museum, but I have to make sure what we do will also keep her entertained.

She went to the Bolshoi a few weeks ago, and loved it, so I’ll (selfishly) suggest that.

What are people in the audience expected to wear? How formal is it?

I recommend that you carry your passport and paperwork at all times. I was walking in Red Square with a co-worker when a policeman came up to us and asked to see our “peepers”. I had heard about the scams and was a little nervous but he looked at them and sent us on our way.

Bring a pistol and a ski mask, you’re going to need it for money if you are there for more than one week

How bad is it?

My housing is free, and I suspect I’ll do some cooking.

That’d actually be fun for me ... Cold War nostalgia I guess.

I will spend Christmas in St Petersburg this year. It will be my first time to Russia. Will be there during our Christmas, not Russian January Christmas. I welcome any suggestions, insights.

Just started the planning process, but Interested in the Hermitage, Faberge, Church of the Savior on Blood, Vodka, Mariinsky Theatre. Staying 5 days and nights in the city center at the Belmont Grand.

I’ve loved Moscow.

It’s a shockingly clean and polite city. I don’t think I heard yelling once, and the police appear to turn on their sirens only briefly, to clear traffic, rather than let them blare. They don’t have trash bins on the metro, but it’s still free of debris. The locals are very respectful of the city, and the people they share it with.

Getting around is easy, via cab or Metro. Uber connects you with a Russian taxi service which is very good.

Both are cheap.

Everything is cheap really, even the best restaurants.

You can run up a bill if you stay at the four seasons, otherwise? It’s very affordable.

The locals are very welcoming, and they were very forgiving of my non existent Russian.

I would absolutely memorize the basics though. Hello, yes, no, thank you. It goes a long way.

I would stay as close to the center as you can get, for practical reasons. It’s also the nicest part of the city.

I had a friend who showed me her favorite restaurants, so I may have a blinkered view, but I thought the food scene was fantastic.

The architecture is a strange mix Imperial Russia, Communist Russia, and modernity.

Lima...your review matches how I feel about Moscow. Of course, I have a friend who is Russian, so it might not be the same for all.

You now need to go to St. Petersburg.

I didn’t expect it, but it’s one of my favorite cities.

And agreed - it makes me want to see St. Petersburg even more.

Moscow has three airports, I landed at DME which is the newest, but the least loved. It’s well out in the country, and it has the charm of a supermarket. Not the most important thing, but if you were choosing between flights, it’s something to consider.
