My wife and I will be in Minneapolis next Wednesday-Sunday. First, we're looking for recommendations on where to stay Friday and Saturday night, we've heard the area "by the lakes" is a cool spot. We're looking for something that is walkable to restaurants, bars, etc... I'm assuming they are referring to Lake Calhoun, is this correct? If so, any recommendations in that area?

Also, we'll both be working on Thursday and Friday, but we'll have the afternoons/nights open and the whole weekend available. Surly brewery is definitely on our list to visit, but other than that we're pretty open. We're not into touristy things, we're really looking for cool neighborhoods to explore, restaurants, bars, breweries (outside of Surly), shopping, etc...

Thanks in advance

I've not been but if I was traveling to Minn I would go to one or both of Gavin Kaysen's restaurants (Spoon and Stable and Bellecour).

He was essentially Daniel Boulud's right hand man in New York and then moved home. Also, could always shoot Brett Anderson an email as he is from there as well.

I was up there for work last year and came into this place for a pint, and ended up watch lawn bowling on top for a couple hours.

They have teams, league, etc and it was a fun watch.

Butcher and the Boar was a really cool restaurant with great food and an outstanding whiskey selection if that's in your wheelhouse.

I've partied in MSP a bunch, but I can't recall many specifics because it always turned into a shite show.

There's a downtown hotel bar where one of the bartenders happens to be a bona-fide sazerac historian. Don't remember the hotel though. I've always stayed at the Hilton downtown, and walked to every place I went to. It's nice.

If the weather is good, check Loring Park/Cherry Statue west of downtown. I also really enjoy walking along the river.

Butcher and the Boar is incredible, a lot of fun after work too.

My boss goes to Minneapolis a ton but the Uptown area has some cool spots, but perhaps younger in crowd. Not sure of any specifics. Perhaps others can help me out on that.

Enjoy MSP

Minneapolis is an awesome city. One of my favorites to visit and I try going every couple months for a weekend since it's a quick-hop from Chicago and a lot of college friends now live there.

In terms of accommodations, I would just stay downtown as you are central to everything and, should you not want to take a Lyft/Uber, you can take the Light Rail all over Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Uptown is home to a lot of young professionals and a couple fun rooftops. Stella's, Libertine, and Moto-I are all lively during the day/night.

As long as you're in Uptown, spend some time walking Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles. Near both of these lakes are Lake & Irving and Barbette for food. Best ice cream spot I've ever been to is Sebastian Joe's.

Another neighborhood loaded with young professions is the North Loop / Warehouse District. I lived in this area for a year after college and it was a terrific locale to downtown Minneapolis. I love me a good coal-fired pizza and I found myself at Black Sheep more times than not. In addition to that, Tullibee is popular (can get crowded), The Bachelor Farmer is farm-to-table, Bar La Grassa is excellent Italian, Red Cow has a great brunch, and, though I've never been, have heard excellent things about Spoon & Stable.

For drinks in the North Loop, Fulton Brewery has a fun, rustic taproom, Borough and Marvel make awesome cocktails, and Freehouse is a fun time.

NE Minneapolis has become a hub of restaurants/bars, too. Psycho Suzi's isn't a terrific bar, by any stretch, but they have a huge patio lining the Mississippi. Visit Indeed Brewing, Dangerous Man Brewing, and Bauhaus.

Not sure how much time you'll want to spend in Dinkytown / University of Minnesota, but it'll likely be on your way to Surly, so might as well stop through campus, check out The Barn, TCF, etc.

There are breweries popping-up everywhere in St. Paul, so let me know if you and the wife plan on heading that way and I can provide some recommendations. A few Surly veterans have opened shop in that part of the Twin Cities, for example.

ETA: totally-spaced on DT Minneapolis. As a couple others have mentioned, Butcher & The Boar is awesome. Brit's Pub has one of the more-popular rooftops in the city. Loring Park and the Sculpture Garden are awesome spots walk through if you're visiting, though you mentioned you weren't too into touristy stuff. Bar Lurcat makes some very nice cocktails. Manny's Steakhouse is highly-regarded. I went there once during college. A lot of late night bars as you move closer to the Target Center. Trashiest place you'll ever wander by / into is Sneaky Pete's.

Sounds good! We may just end up staying downtown, another friend also recommended that. Thanks for the restaurant and bar recommendations!

Sculpture garden is awesome

Stone arch bridge is a great spot in the evening to walk.

The northloop / warehouse district area has some really nice local breweries (I love Modist and Fulton).

Enjoy your time

If you get into St. Paul check out the Cathedral and St. Capitol area. Also the MN history musuem is nice as well

Only had half of today. Hit up the sculpture garden, some churches in Minneapolis and the massive mall. Pics will be posted in a new thread.

If a beer guy, go check out Barrel Theory in St Paul. It's well worth the short trip!

Yes, yes and yes. Barrel Theory kicks arse and, also, started by a couple Surly vets. I have two crowlers of Shooter McGavin and Rain Drops in my fridge right now.

I would even recommend taking University back towards Minneapolis and making a stop at Blackstack, too.

Yes we did. It was pretty weird so it was a quick walk through. Lots of hippies and gay folk in there.
