Planning a quick family trip to Milwaukee for Mother's day weekend (5/9). We have 4 kids (4-12yo). We'll definitely go to a Brewers/Yankees game on either Friday or Saturday but nothing else planned. We'll have all day Friday and Saturday. Any suggestions on where to stay (preferably hilton property). Also, things to do and restaurants. Somewhere nice for dinner, kid friendly for lunch. Any breweries with nice outdoor areas that things for kids to do. Appreciate any suggestions

My only suggestion to look into staying at the Iron Horse
Very cool motorcycle influenced hotel in a good location

I think Hoops Galore had a lengthy Milwaukee post in another thread not too long ago.

My suggestion for you for the Brewers game is to go there to tailgate. Pack some drinks and maybe a few sandwiches and go walk the parking lots right by the stadium. It's the best baseball tailgate in the majors. And I'm a diehard cubs fan.

And similar to if you come to a Packers game from out of state, you may get some free booze or food if you chat up the locals and tell them your story.

If you're a beer guy there's some good breweries and brewery tours to check out. I can't remember but one of them is supposed to be great. Perhaps lakefront? The art museum is supposed to be really cool if the weather isn't great. Could also mix in a lake cruise.

I did, but probably not the most family-friendly recommendations MKE is an S tier bar/tavern city, that's for sure.

Not surprisingly the Brew City has a bunch of beer garden options. Perhaps 3rd Ward may be the move if you're staying downtown but lots of others to choose from.

Milwaukee's outdoor beer gardens

quote:

Nestled in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward, the Third Ward Beer Garden at Catalano Square brings neighbors together around a unique two-level container bar. It's an easy spot to grab dinner to go from a local restaurant and enjoy local brews from Third Space, cocktails or wine, while free live music fills the summer air. Or stop by on your way to a festival at Henry Maier Festival Park.

ETA: I'm seeing that there's a Central Waters right near downtown...didn't know it was there. I used to drink their barrel aged stuff all the time when I lived in Chicago. Definitely top tier BA stuff and worth checking out if they have some on the menu. That Black Gold, Peruvian Morning Stout, and BA Scotch Ale

Green Bay is not far. Packers have a great museum and the tour of the stadium is really good. I think it is the oldest stadium in the nfl.

It's about a 2 hr drive. So if he's only got a few days I wouldn't recommend it unless he's a HUGE Packer or football fan. No shade at Geebs, I grew up there a few blocks from Lambeau, just a lot more to do and see in Milwaukee.

We love the downtown Hilton Milwaukee. It's a little dated but that's the charm. The Miller Brew Pub restaurant is alright and it's nice having a legit Starbucks on property.

I suggest going to Mader's German Restaurant for dinner. The Old World decor is pretty dang cool and the food is great.

There's a nice lakefront park to walk, and a stop at the Betty Brinn Children's Museum could be fun for your kids.

I work downtown. Yes for the Hilton Milwaukee. You can easily walk to the 3rd St Market Hall and the Milwaukee Public Market. Either of those for the kid friendly lunch. There's a newer place that's supposed to have great burgers called Draft and Co that's about a two minute walk. And Mader's for nice dinner yes. Milwaukee Brat House on the same street as Mader's is good. The Art Museum is world class, a 20-25 minute walk. Ride the streetcar "The Hop" for the novelty as it's not really an efficient way to get from A to B. You can walk to all the downtown highlights. The ballpark is the only thing you'll need to drive to, 10-15 minutes from downtown on a weekend. More on a Friday since there's a big freeway construction clusterf in that area.

Lakefront Brewing has a great restaurant somewhat Munich beer hall like with great food. The Brewery tour was one of the best I’ve been on. A great “rags to riches” story, “free beer”, and a free pint glass. Central Waters didn’t have a tour as far as I know and their tap room is pretty low key, kind of like an old church/school cafeteria with a stage even though its in an old warehouse or office building downtown by the arena.

Tour the Pabst Mansion near Marquette University. The Milwaukee Food Hall was a nice afternoon. Stop at Foltz Family Market their for Brats or a half rotisserie chicken and wash it down with a Spotted Cow.

If you’re a Frank Lloyd Wright fan and have time drive down to Racine and tour the Johnson Wax Building and Wingspread house.

If you’re Catholic go to Sunday mass at the Basilica of St. Joshaphat. Free tour after the 10 AM mass. Not much to look at on the outside, but a wonderful interior with an interesting story.
