I'm trying to plan a summer beach trip for my family (about 14 of us) and am ideally looking to go somewhere on or near the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but am open to any suggestions.

I'm not looking for a huge resort town with high rise condos. I'd like a place where the average temperature will be somewhere between 75-90 degrees during the summer months (hence the Outer Banks idea). I visit the Gulf frequently and it can get so dang hot down there in July/August!

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations from experience?

Duck and Corolla on the outer banks are both great along with Kiawah and Hilton Head in SC.

OBX is great. We did a week there summer of 2014 and loved it. There were only four of us, and we had a condo in Kill Devil Hills. Go down Hwy 12 a ways (like Wave or Buxton) and there are some pretty big houses that you can rent out. Now when you get down that way, you don't have the amenities available as you do around Kittyhawk, but the isolation is one of the better parts of the OBX. We booked through Sun Realty and they were great.

If you want to come a little farther south, Kiawah Island, Hilton Head or Isle of Palms SC are good. We have been to Isle of Palms five times in the last 6 year. Island Realty handles condos and houses on the island and in the Wild Dunes resort section as well. You are within a 30 minute drive of anything in the greater Charleston area - Ashley River plantations, downtown Charleston, Ft. Sumter, the aquarium and Patriots Point.

I would suggest Wrightsville Beach, NC. You can rent houses fairly easily there and it is not a resort type atmosphere. Great food on the island and beaches are nice.

I have vacationed at 2 different beaches since moving to NC 20 years ago. Each one for about 10 years. Holden Beach has houses close to each other which is good in that there are plenty to choose from. Although lots of houses, no high rises and not really that commercial. The last 10 years we have vacationed out on Bald Head island. It's a bit more expensive and only accessible by passenger ferry. Golf carts only out on the island, I have no problem recommending either of those two locations. Let me know if you choose Holden or Bald Head and I can give you pointers on where to rent.
