Any and all advice is appreciated. Thinking of renting a car to drive through the highlands and possibly isle of skye. TIA!

I’m going in late Sept.....flying into Edinburgh, driving to Glencoe for hiking, etc.

Don't miss Skye. Get some Lagavulin at the distillery.
You can thank me later.

cool. We are heading to Scotland next month. Starting in Edinburgh for 3 days and then to St. Andrews, Inverness for 2 days, Oban for 2 days, Iona, Kenmore for 2 days and back to Edinburgh. Many side trips scheduled during the drive. Doing the Guinness tour in Edinburgh and the Oban tour in Oban. I lost count of the castles we are going to see and we are also going to motorboat in Loch Ness.
I suggest reading the Rick Steves forums for things to do and places to eat in Scotland. He is usually spot on with his suggestions.
My friends who go there tell me to dress in layers and bring waterproof shoes and a rain coat of some sort...they say umbrellas are useless.

Yes to the waterproof coat & shoes...not water resistant. Get a jacket or longer coat that is legit waterproof, seam-sealed.

Looking to go for my 40th in 18 months.
Doing London and taking train to Scotland so i will be saving this for future use.
FYI, if you or your wife have never seen Outlander on Starz, check it out. Good show and its based on a book series about the 1700 Jacobite rebellion in Scotland. Main character is from Inverness

I'm currently in Edinburgh and have visited a couple of islands in the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, and Aberdeen. You are OK skipping Aberdeen unless you REALLY like grey granite. Edinburgh is a cool city but beware of a couple of things. It is hilly in the touristy parts of the city. Edinburgh castle is constantly busy. Mary King Close is interesting but quite Disney-fied.
I really liked the Outer Hebrides, but there isn't going to be much to do other than relaxation and get away from the civilization. I did visit the Calenish stones and some other Neolithic sites which was neat.

Oh, and if you are interested in touring St Andrews I'd advise you to book in advance. Slots fill up quick.

Here's a link to the place I rented in Glencoe: LINK
Walk Highlands website is a fantastic resource for finding trails and paths. Very detailed route maps, downloadable GPS waypoints, short descriptions of hikes w/pics, and reviews from others who've done the paths. LINK
If you head to Glencoe/Ft William area, check out the Loch Leven Seafood Cafe--a little seasonal place selling locally harvested catches: LINK

My wife and I were in Scotland two weeks ago. Some thoughts and impressions:
1. The Highlands are even more beautiful in person. Perfect if you hike, etc.
2. Loved Edinburgh. Great, old city with lots of history. Nice pubs and lots of choices to eat.
3. There is more to St. Andrews than golf. Very old city with lots of history. Take the time to see some of it.
4. Scots are very friendl and proud of their country and heritage. Enjoy.

Do NOT miss Skye. It was the absolute highlight for me. The town of Portree is pretty cool itself to use as a base for your doings on the island. The only distillery on the island is Talisker, and it is in a REALLY cool spot. When I went, Three Chimneys was the most remote Michelin-starred restaurant in the world (probably not true anymore since they opened that place in the Faroe Islands) and it was worth seeing. The drive up the Eastern coast of the Isle will give you good views of Old Man of Storr and Mealt Falls. You can then drive straight west through the Quiraing...spectacular. You can see the heather everywhere and the brown water flowing into all of this Scotch! The lighthouse at Neist Point is a must:
The Culloden Battlefield is very much worth visiting.
Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are a do.
If you have your own car, make sure to do the drive @ Applecross.
You don't hear as much about the Border Regions, but there is beautiful scenery down there as well. Sir Walter Scott's mansion @ Abbotsford is a cool spot.
And here's a really helpful tip: use this site to get a forecast where you are going for the midges! If they happen to be bad, then they are absolutely miserable.
