This July I am planning to drive to Kennewick, Washington to visit my parents. Furthest drive I've ever made is Atlanta from Baton Rouge. On the way there, I'll drive toward the Four Corners, then the Bonneville Salt Flats. On the way back, I'm planning to drive through Yellowstone and the Black Hills, stop at Mt. Rushmore and drive through Omaha to see Rosenblatt Monument. Then drive home. I think this will be a 5000 mile round trip. What are some preparations that I need to make for my truck? It's at 87,000 miles currently, so it's still in great shape.

Oil change, check tire pressure, check air filter, bring jumper cables

Use common sense baw

ETA: map out trip and if you find yourself driving over a long stretch without gas stations in the middle of nowhere, bring a gas can

If you're not already a AAA member, you might consider joining. If you get a flat, lock yourself out of your vehicle, etc, AAA can save your butt when you're in an unfamiliar place.

Also, you might consider carrying a few basic supplies: a few gallons of water, some spare coolant, a small cigarette plug powered air compressor, a decent full sized spare tire.

I'd get new windshield wiper blades, too. They never seem to fail until you're far from home.

After the onslaught of rain that came down in February, the blades are basically new. I may have to look into AAA. Already planned to have a thorough inspection to make sure truck was running in top shape.

I'm wondering: why not rent a car for a 5,000 mile road trip? You'll save the wear & tear on your vehicle, and you can probably rent something significantly more fuel efficient than a truck. You could probably cover the rental cost with the savings in gas. Are you planning to haul something home or need towing capacity? Just curious....

This. Just be sure to get unlimited miles for the duration of the rental.

Not really hauling anything. I'm not planning to eat out on the drive. So I'll have an ice chest full of stuff. Plus I'm probably bringing golf clubs too. I'd rather not deal with rentals. My dad travels a lot for work, and he hates dealing with rentals. Plus I'm not a car guy either. I like sitting up high.

Fair enough. What's your average highway MPG in your truck? At 22 mpg for a 5K road trip, figuring an average of $2.50/gallon for fuel, you'll spend at least $568 in gas.

Renting a full sized sedan for ~3 weeks is about $1K with unlimited mileage.

Give me the handling & performance of a quality car any day over a loooonnnnggg road trip in a truck.

New trucks are pretty comfortable. You can also throw an air mattress in the bed if you want to camp one night. Can't do that in a sedan.

One weekend I basically drove from Lockport to Zachary to West Monroe to Benton and back to Zachary. Got about 20.5 for that road trip. For highway it probably won't be bad. And I agree about the comfort of a truck over a car. My backseat is big enough I could sleep in.

On a longer trip, one huge advantage of renting is that if your car breaks down or you have an accident, you can call the car rental and have a new vehicle within hours. No waiting for your car to be repaired.

That and you save wear and tear on your personal vehicle.

I’d second the AAA recommendation. I’d do an oil change before you head out so you don’t have to worry about it while you are in the middle of Yellowstone. Change your air filter and have your mechanic look at breaks, systems, etc. you should be good to go.
Also, I just bought a roll up bed cover and took my first road trip with it- I wish I had bought one years ago. It was nice to be able to put a lot of stuff in the bed without having to worry about the weather.
I’d also make sure you have tinted windows to keep you more comfortable during the long haul.
