July driving trip to NM or CO

Hi guys
I live in DFW and we are wanting to drive to the mountains in July to get away for a week
We’ve done Breck and CO a few times and are wondering if trying NM would work since none of us have ever been to the northern region
My kids are 10 and 8 and love zip lining, tubing and riding up to the top of the mountains on the lifts.
Everything I see online keeps taking me to Red River because apparently they have lots for kids and families. It’s 10 hours from my house and we have family in Lubbock so that’s exactly halfway
Any thoughts on the Taos/Red River/Angel Fire and what’s best for families?
Also thinking of going the long way from Lubbock and going through Roswell and Sante Fe. Thoughts?

Red River is probably best unless you want to be a bit more secluded. Enjoy!

Beautiful lakes. Where was that specifically?

Unless you are alien fanatics I'd skip Roswell.
Santa Fe is more for adults than kids. Walk around the plaza, tons of museums and art galleries, great food. If it is a convenient one night stop on your way to or from Lubbock then maybe include it, but probably a better place to come with just the wife or when the kids are older.

Have you been to SW Colorado?
Durango, Crested Butte & Telluride would be my suggestion.

Do you even Meow Wolf bro?
If you end up anywhere near Taos then you should eat every meal at Ranchos Plaza Grill. Maybe go to Orlando’s once.
I like Taos or Santa Fe for a long weekend trip. I’m ready to head home after a couple days of each. Santa Fe has some cool hikes by the ski area and some hoodoos by Jemez Springs. Plaza is neat for an hour or two. La Choza, The Pantry, and Paper Dosa are my favorites that I’ve tried.
Taos plaza is much much smaller. Divisadero trail is a good short hike near town. Not sure what they do with the ski area in the summer. They have some hot springs but be warned, they’re pretty scuzzy. If you are in Taos then the Spanish Peaks and Sand Dunes National Park isn’t that far away and a really pretty drive. Historic Taos Inn has great margaritas and live music.

OP, during your trip planning, did you uncover any insight that would make you hesitant to visit CO in July (ie. local restrictions still in place)? We go to Breck for 1-2 weeks every July but haven't booked anything this year. I think the town will open up short term lodigng starting June 1st, but I don't think that's been officially announced. I'm just now seeing restaurants are opening at a limited capacity and masks are MANDATORY everywhere in public. I'm wondering how long this will last, and it worries me that we'll go all the way out there in 6 weeks or so and things won't really be back to normal (or at least very close to being normal).
Curious on your thoughts here.

Breck is almost likely about to close Main Street to traffic to allow restaurants more outdoor space for dining, FYI. I wouldnt vacation in Summit County this summer.

I really like the area around Gunnison, CO. Really good fishing around the confluence of the Gunnison & Taylor Rivers and near Crested Butte.

Hogwall - any other areas close by that may be better in mid-July comparatively speaking? Vail / BC is in Eagle County and may be less restrictive I’m hearing.

Forgot about this, fun for kids of all ages, and adults.
Unfortunately they may still be closed in July as the NM gov is firmly in the no mass gatherings camp.
