Arriving March 4, itinerary:
Tokyo- 2 nights, Shinjuku
Magome / Tsumago - 2 nights, walking Nakasendo
Kyoto - 3 nights
Mount Koya - 2 nights
Osaka - 2 nights
Home from Osaka. Weather forecast for two days on the walk is now low 40's and possible snow / rain so considering an audible and dropping Nakasendo. Input appreciated on an early March trip.

Don’t miss this place, it was one of my favorite things I did while in Japan

Just visited in October: I did my first 2 nights in Shinjuku, next night in Ueno (to get out of Shinjuku-really touristy), then went to Osaka for 2 days, took train to Kyoto and Nara for the deer then back to Tokyo for 2 nights.
I would get a JR Rail pass. Unlimited use of any JR railway, including Shinkansen. Several subways/trains are JR in Tokyo and Osaka. Made travel super easy. You can also reserve a Mobile Wi-Fi and have someone from JR meet you at the airport to help with the Rail pass voucher and wi-fi pickup. Would highly recommend.
Japan is one of the coolest places I've ever visited. Culturally unique and advanced, imo. Can't wait to go back.

Many years ago I got a travel wifi.
Now I don't see the need when I can just use my phone anywhere?
Also after they raised the JR Pass rates it doesn't seem worth it unless you are using it a lot
For this guy's trip admittedly he is moving around a lot, it may be worth it

People always underestimate how much you can "abuse" the concierges at hotels, airports, train stations, etc. You can probably extend this to most Air BnB owners in Japan, if that's what you're doing. Email them ahead of time, tell them what you're planning on doing, and ask for their suggestions. In Japanese style, you'll probably check in and find handwritten cards to show to cab drivers to get you to some out of the way shrine or ramen place, etc.
To the later poster, I agree on mobile Wifi. I've spent 15 years being this close to buying a travel router, and I never actually need it enough to pull the trigger. Five lifetime VPN device slots have kept me connected on public or censored wifi for more than a decade.

Appreciated. I'm very much looking forward to this trip.
We were hoping to walk the Nakasendo for two days after arriving in Japan but as I said in my op, the weather has turned from mid 50''s and sunny to upper 30's and snow. We have reservations in Tsumago. I wondered if anyone else had walked in similar conditions. But have just about decided to pull the trigger cancel Tsumago, extend at our current Tokyo hotel nd try to find a day trip outside the city before we move on to the rest of our itinerary.

You know what you're comfortable wearing in slippery conditions, and you probably also know that the Japanese love to pour concrete and tile on all kinds of nature. I have one pair of trainers that is slick as snot on wet, hard surfaces, yet fine on dirt. At the same time, I've seen salarymen hiking Fujiyama in slick soled leather shoes.

Lol. When we booked the hike, we were thinking spring time. It's a five hour hike through the mountains from Magome, Tsumago etc. Latest forecast is upper 30's and snow both days. That's not a vacation

You would still need an eSIM. There’s no ATT towers in Japan baw…At least with mobile WiFi, you can attach and stream on multiple devices simultaneously without multiple eSIM cards. The price was comparable between the WiFi and the eSIM, so WiFI obviously makes more sense.
The Shinkansen tickets round trip alone almost made up the price of the rail pass and I didn’t have to pay .60-$1.50 at every stop on the subway. There are also multiple other discounts and passes accessible through JR that you don’t otherwise get access to using a Suica, which I would also recommend having for non-JR lines.

I visited it during June/July timeframe, but Nikko Park is a fantastic visit and would probably be gorgeous with snow, and is a nice day trip from Tokyo.
Nara is well worth a visit as Tigerreich mentioned, but that would be something to add to the Osaka/Kyoto side of your visit.

Here is a calculator you can use to see if buying the JR pass is worth it vs just buying the tickets as you need.
LINK
Keep in mind, JR pass will not work on all the lines in the metro rail systems. So you'll need to get a Suica card or some other kind of IC card and just load that as you need. IC Cards can also be used as a form of purchase any many retail outlets, including convenience stores like 7-11.

There's enough WiFi in Japan, including at your hotel, where you can probably get away with WiFi calling.
Also OP, if your phone is locked, you can't use an eSIM. Your carrier probably has international roaming though.
