The paved trail will take up into the park and East into Jackson. It’s well done and popular.

It even goes South down to Hog Island. But there isn’t anything to see down there, that’s really just a convenience for locals.

I had endurance issues when I first got into the mountains, but they usually hit me around 7k. The valley floor is lower, and you may be better adapted to the altitude than I am.

Take a look at Snow King, it’s a challenging climb, but the views are great.

And I would absolutely fly into Jackson too. The cost is negligible. And you’ll save so much travel time.

It’s also a cool little airport, with astonishing views.

Plus the chamber of commerce serves Mimosas for arriving flights.

Take the the road up Swan Valley, past the reservoir, through Alpine.

Or take Swan Valley, and then cut north through the hills to Victor.

Those will get you off the interstate and give you the best views.

That last pic of the Chapel in GTNP, and at nearby Mormon Row, was were I took some of the most extraordinary photos of my life. It's magical scenery. Thanks for the memories of both GT and YP.

A couple of months ago, the ticket difference between SLC and Jackson was $300/ticket. Now it's $130/ticket. That might be worth it, but I'll have to see how bad the wife wants to go to SLC. We love it there.

Rental car expense was quite a bit cheaper when I was looking at Idaho Falls compared to Jackson as well.

Flying into SLC on the 23rd. We have a rafting trip all day on the 27th and the wife and I are doing an all day fly fishing school on the 1st. Have reservations at Coelette one night. Snake River Grill another night.

Anymore can't miss things to see/do/eat/drink? Looks like there are only a handful of breweries so I should be able to hit them all.

Go to Melvin. It’s the best.

Melvin’s brewery and tasting room is in Alpine, but they also have a bar and Thai restaurant in Jackson - it’s called Thai Me Up.

Persephone is a French bakery in town, just off the square. It’s not just good by Jackson standards, it would be good anywhere.

Otherwise, Jackson has okay food, but nothing you’d take a detour for.

Land prices are sky high, so the food scene tends to be very conventional. Almost everything is some kind of steakhouse, with decent but not exactly exciting options.

The Thai food in town is okay. The Chinese is bad though, oh lord it’s bad

That sounds about right. There isn’t a huge premium on that connection normally.

It’s also a super cool little airport. With amazing views of the Tetons.

Secret spot:

Atherton Creek

May not be up your alley logistically but its a gem. The "lake" and creek was formed by the mountian splitting in half. Interesting topography. There's a river, cliff and deep diving spot up a pace and it seems to be tradition to jump nude. Women are normally in normal form in the west.

download the gypsy app to use while driving through the parks
You need two days in Yellowstone to see the park
If you enjoy mountains, hiking, and wildlife, GTNP is awesome

Left Salt Lake on Friday and drove to Jackson Hole. We took the scenic route going to Logan, UT first and then on to Jackson. The drive was amazing, but very remote. At some point we saw a sign that said next gas station 70 miles and they meant it! We drove through Caribou National Park and Grand Teton National Park to ultimately get to Jackson.

We were tired after the drive and just decided to do a quick trip to Dorman’s to get some beers and pizza. That was a good decision.

Views from the deck are amazing. We couldn’t believe it wasn’t more crowded than it was.

Lazy sleep-in day today. Think the women want to spend the day kicking around Jackson. Drove through it last night. Was worried it was gonna be Gatlinburg in Wyoming, but it appeared to be OK.

Slept in today. Went and rented bikes in Wilson and rode up to Teton Village and back. That was fun.

Toured Jackson with the women. They shopped and did women stuff. It isn’t Gatlinburg yet, but it’s close. Me and the brother-in-law hit Roadhouse Brewery for appetizers and beers. It was great.

Some blistered peppers and dipping sauce. Very good.

We ate dinner at Snake River Grill. Lamb was amazing.

Going rafting tomorrow. Bought Yellowstone supplies today.

It’s a nice drive. But I live in Los Angeles and am used to traffic in a crowded metro and driving through the desert to Las Vegas.

The area around Idaho falls is unremarkable farmland, the rest of the drive is scenic.

I second the recommendation of Jackson hole airport. It’s in grand Teton National park and the backdrop is stunning.

Waiting for the rafting trip at 10AM. Drinking coffee and checking out the scenery from the back deck.

There’s some sort of hot air balloon deal here this week.

Holy shite. Yellowstone is fricking huge. I mean….. we knew it was, but it’s not until you get there that you truly understand. Wow.

We got up early, ate breakfast, and left. I’d like to go ahead a give a big shout out to this board for the pack a cooler advice and the itinerary. We wouldn’t have made it without the cooler! The drive from Jackson to Yellowstone was scenic and uneventful. You cross both Teton and Yellowstone park entrances so you will have to pay to enter both. I say that so you don’t have to pay the Teton park pass twice like my dumbass did because I left the pass at the condo. We left at 7:20. We were at the first stop by 10:20.

Anyway, we started at Old Faithful with the crowd.

I know most said this was anti-climatic, but my wife and I loved it. I’m a geology dork (only 100 I ever got in college). The whole geyser areas was fascinating to me.

We hiked about 4 miles at the Old Faithful area. It was hot and the area is very crowded. We found what the OT has known forever: America is fat and lazy. So, the further away from the parking lot and the gift shop you get, the less crowd there is to deal with.

From there we started the clockwise trip around the southern loop. Next stop was Firehole Falls. We went here because we wanted to eat and there was no one there. I noticed a trail down to the creek and took it. It was more challenging than the wife was willing to do, but I got a good pic and was able to stick my feet in the water.

My wife wanted to sit and eat so we meandered around the loop again and stopped at a little overlook with no crowd, We stopped at Gibbon River overlook. We sat under a shade tree along the bank and ate sandwiches. I looked up and this dude was standing across the river from us at about 20 yds.

He didn’t like us much and tried to flex on us by bowing up and stomping and snorting. He ended up prancing off like the fairy mule deer he was.

After that excitement, it was close to 3PM and we had to hit the can’t miss stop the Travel Board told me about: Grand Canyon at Yellowstone. It was a shitshow getting to the Upper Canyon so we started on the Lower. We walked the entirety of Uncle Tom’s Trail. It had some challenging switchbacks in it and the wife only made it about 3/4 of the way.

We left there and headed to the Upper Canyon. I discovered what the traffic problem was. A fricking bison had decided to lay on the side of the road and every idiot had to stop and take a pic of it. I told my wife she had 5 secs to take a pic.

Anyway, we took the 1/2 mile hike down to the falls. It has 600ft of elevation change and is a challenge for anyone that is not in shape. The switchbacks make it an easy trip for those is reasonable shape. The pay off pics are worth the walk.

It was well after 5PM when we got done here and called it a day. We were beat. So we headed back south to Jackson and ran into a wreck.

It had traffic backed up for miles. There’s nothing to do but wait as there is no way around it. We sat there for about an hour. We malfunctioned packing the cooler and neglected some beers (I know, I know, I know). So we stopped at Jackson Lake Lodge for a 22oz beer apiece. The view at sunset (9PM) was worth the wait.

Slept in this AM. About to grab brunch somewhere. Jenny Lake tomorrow and fly fishing Thursday.
