Thanks for all the info, really don't want to rent a car unless we have to. The only place I might rent one would be Florence area, but I think we can take a train to the couple of places we want to go...pisa, cinque terre, sienna, bologna. Trying to book hotel/vrbo now in Verrena on Lake Como, but trying to figure out train to Venice from there. Looked at lake garda as well, even staying in Verona, but wife wants to see Lake Como area.

Training around all of there is not going to be easy. Your best bet is honestly to try and just take a lot of ubers to and from the major train stations.

Train systems in Europe are fantastic for certain things. Going to places like Tuscany and Lake Como though is going to make you realize a train system is far inferior to a rental car.

3 days in Milan is too much.

1-2 days in Florence is enough, then you should rent a car and see some of Tuscany/Umbria provience (Volterra, Lucca, Siena, Cortona, Todi, and Orvieto are great spots to spend one day each in) during the rest of the 9th-15th timeframe you have reserved for Florence.

I'd caveat your statement about Florence. For an art lover 1-2 days isn't nearly enough. It's an art lovers paradise.

We are really only in Milan for day and half to start. Arrive around noon and plan on spending that night and next there.

Wife wants some relaxation time so that is why trying to stay in Florence longer. She doesn’t want to be moving every couple of days to different venues.

Aside from the Tuscan countryside, the best place to relax and soak in the atmosphere is Venice.

You can add Lake Como to that and if you've never been to the Piedmonte region you should go. The wine is just as good, the food is fantastic and the views are amazing.

All without the crowds of Venice and I do love Venice.
