Heading to Europe for the first time next month.

I currently have Verizon, but i wouldn't object to moving to T-Mobile possibly.
Looking at their data plans, Verizon says you get to use your normal plan, but the data is capped at .5GB per day. Sounds like you get high speed data until that .5GB is used, then the data rate is useless after that at 2G speeds.

T-Mobile says unlimited data, but their data rate is at 128kb/s, which i would think is also rather useless.

Should i just assume i'm not going to be able to use data on my phone more than likely?
I've heard there is public wifi in some areas, like in Paris, but is that safe to use?

You'll have free wifi in most places you go.

Google Project Pi, went to Portugal and didn't change anything used my phone like I would anywhere else. My bill never changed and remained the same when I returned as they have no roaming in like 150 countries.

The easiest solution, but not the cheapest, is Daypass/Travelpass. It's 10 bucks a day and you use your plan like at home.

I've use AT&T's variant a bunch over the years, but haven't used Verizon's (just switched). It appears to work exactly the same, however.

I'm not a fan of AT&T generally but I will say that the daypass thing works flawlessly. I assume VZW's is as good or better.

If you don’t care about your phone number and just want data, buy a local sim for $10 and as much data as you think you’ll need. Vodaphone in Italy sold me 50 gigs for about $40.

The Verizon data rate is useless. I would buy a local SIM card.

You’ll end up asking for the WiFi code wherever you go.

It’s just easier to buy a SIM card.

Cheapest option is at store in Europe, next cheapest option, an airport kiosk.

You can always buy a SIM card on amazon, it’s more expensive than buying in Europe. But it’s an easy option, and still vastly cheaper than paying for extra data from Verizon.

The French telecom Orange sells a holiday sim package. You still need to activate it online when you get in country, but you can do that on your phone.

I used welcomepickups in Europe for my ride from the airport. They had a <$15 SIM card in my car when they picked me up that was enough data for our 1-2 weeks there. There may be a cheaper way but not an easier one. Make sure your phone is unlocked before you go or just buy an old phone on eBay and sell it back when you return.

If this is a one off trip I would not bother, if you will be traveling internationally a lot then Fi is the way to go.

No experiance with Verizon but T-mobile will terminate international roaming if you regularly use lots of data overseas, their plan is for vacationers who dont travel a lot or use much data.

It may depend on where you are going but we were in England and France in September and Verizon charged us $10/day if we used data. It worked like a charm for us. If you don’t use it in a 24 hour period there is no charge.

Yeah, I've been with Google since the flood. Minor issues here and there but nothing major, using Pixel 3a XL now

Exzachree

I can deal with that, I’m not downloading the entirety of the Library of Congress.

Well be in London and Paris.
Was the data you used with Verizon fast enough to do things? I think .5G a day is enough but if it’s at 3G or lower, it’s worthless.

Plenty of cheap paid "wifi" in London through BT, it is cheap as chips you might say, have not been to Paris recently enough to comment on it.

BT has a channel on the routers that use their service that you can log into via a paid service and it works pretty well and most everywhere including trains.
