Hypothetical Trip To Manchester (Quick Turnaround)

What's up my travel peeps...
I want to attend a Manchester United game before Old Trafford closes.
What is the quickest (realistic) trip that I could make from Houston? Literally fly there the day before, go to the game and then maybe fly back the next day? I've never been to Europe before so I really have no clue how the whole jet-lag process works...
I would take the trip in late March-early April.
Hit me with your scenarios!

I wouldn't do that for a soccer game but to each their own. You might consider an extended stay where you at least spend a few days hitting the main tourist sights in London.
Either way, I think you're best move is to take a direct flight on United or British Airways from IAH to LHR then take a bus or train to Manchester.
Your flight will land early in the morning, England time, and you will be tired and grumpy from 10-14 hours of dealing with airports and poor or little sleep. Ordinarily the advice on Europe vacations is to plow through that first awful day to help reset your internal clock, but if you're only there for a brief stop to watch a scheduled event then you might as well check into a hotel and crash into bed as soon as you can.

My wife and I both want to eventually come back to England for an extended stay. However, this will be for my 40th birthday, and we are already planning a trip to Spain and Portugal for the World Cup in 2030 - so that's the reason it would be a quick trip.

I had the fortune to take the Singapore flight direct from IAH to MAN to visit a real ground in Merseyside a few years ago... That's almost the exact time period I went, too. If you can plan it over a bank holiday, you get extra days of fun with very lubricated Mancunians.
Take a direct to Frankfurt on UA/LH (Lufthansa), and then take LH to MAN. The route out of IAH used to be on the 747-800.
Do not waste a trip just to spend a day there. Spend some time in Manchester, Liverpool, Wales, etc.
ETA: You may have to buy hospitality tickets from the club, I wasn't able to buy just a ticket from the US easily even with three months of lead time. I bought a hospital ticket the first week of Jan for mid April.

That's an easy trip and definitely doable if you can get a direct flight. I wouldn't want to risk layovers anywhere on a trip that short
Jet lag is overrated you'll be fine

I get you are going on another trip, but lets do some math here. First, that's a good time to travel for prices often times so you maybe able to find some good tickets.
But lets say $750 for airfare and $250 for the match ticket.
Lets say $200/ night for a hotel. You are likely to have at least $250for incidentals like airport transfer, etc. It could be closer to $500 easily depending on train tickets if you have to fly elsewhere.
This is going to be $1500 at least.
You really can't spend 3-5 days for another $1000 or so? That seems like a wild trip to me.
Also, what if something happens with the game? What if it gets lightning or something? IDK. I'm just saying, anything is possible. What if your flight was delayed?
I think if I was putting in that much effort, I'd want to arrive at least 2 days early. Give yourself one day for flight issues. One day to adjust.

That, or purchase an official membership for like $40 for the year. The latter will allow you to buy regular tickets direct from the club.
IMHO though, if you're traveling that far you may as well splurge on a hospitality package
