I've been in Houston for a bit, and am gonna be here for another month for work. Gf decided she wants to come up this weekend. I'm staying by IAH, so it's not the ideal place for activities. Thinking about getting another room downtown or something for the weekend.

Since there are a thousand hotels in this city, do yall have any suggestions for a weekend stay (under $200/night)? Is downtown the best place to be if we wanna go out to eat for all meals, and to a bar or possibly music at night? Last time I came here, midtown was the happening place, but that was 5 years ago. I stayed downtown, and there were a million bums basically demanding money. That annoyed me.

Coming from New Orleans, I obviously like good food. For bars, I don't like hipsters and SJWs, and I don't want to get into a bar fight with a 22 year old over a spilled Jaeger bomb.

After reading reviews, that is definitely not the place we're gonna be staying. There are consistencies in the bad reviews

How much time do you plan to spend in the hotel room?

Does it have to be a hotel? Plenty of Airbnb's in the Heights or Midtown in walking distance to a lot.

Also, if you are planning it this weekend, note that the Marathon is Sunday Morning with a 5K on Saturday morning. Getting around Sunday morning may be challenging and if you want a nice brunch place, make a reservation now.

Hotel Icon is downtown and would fit within your budget. It's nothing special but definitely nice enough for a good weekend impression. It's been a couple of years since my stay there but I found it comfortable and close to lots of food and bars...and worlds away from the IAH/Gunspoint scene. You might also consider Hotel Sorella at CityCentre. Everything is walking distance out there and the great restaurants in The Heights are only a short Uber ride away. They always have live music in the V Lounge at Eddie V's and often times in the hotel bar, too.

Definitely spend time in the heights there are a million bars and restaurants : Taco a go-go for lunch is a must, all of the street tacos are great. And for drinking Heights Bier Garten, Bier Haus, Bungalow Heights, etc.

Eat mexican food at El Tiempo, go for the filet fajitas, a little pricier but worth it.

I second Marriott Marquis. Stayed there for an anniversary staycation 2 weeks ago. Though it can't be fully enjoyed in this weather. But everything is either a short walk or $5 uber ride away. Breweries, bars, museums, restaurants, theaters, etc... in 2 nights we did original ninfas, Ibiza, alley theater, several bars on main st, discovery green. And never once had to pull my car out of the garage.

I've also had good stays at Magnolia and Le Meridian, but they are smaller, more quaint hotels.

Hughie's on N Main in the heights is a cool restaurant and has a separate cocktail bar.

A bunch of good restaurants on Shepard and 20th with bars just west.

LaGrange in the Montrose area has some good cocktails.

They have a huge portrait next to the check in desk that’s made from spent shell casings.

Don’t recall who it is but it’s awesome.

Last minute decided I wanted to stay at a trendier place, so got a room in the Hotel Alessandra. Room was nice, bar was small, but nice (good apps), staff was very good, but they nitpicked with room service fees. On top of the normal high prices, they added a delivery fee ($4), and 20% gratuity to that. Breakfast ended up costing me $61 one morning for nothing special. Valet was $38/day. They shuttled us around in a Maserati, which was cool.

Went to Howl at the Moon Saturday night. That place was an absolute blast. Walked out to try the Irish Cowboy place that was recommended by a friend, but it is shut down.

The Boot on Sunday for the Saints game was another great time. Food was legit.

Lyft was cheap as hell getting anywhere. We went from downtown to The Galleria for $6.50, and to The Boot for $7.20. In New Orleans, those would've been $30 trips.

The blackbirds/grackles still amaze me. Never seen anything like it
